My thoughts about indie games.

Okay. So recently I just found out how to upload my recent game (and only one I have published so far) Mr.Otter to newgrounds.com. Not even two hours later, someone commented on it explaining all the faults in the game and calling it names that I cannot repeat! Although this makes me quite upset (having this game in development for months) I always keep in mind the famous phrase and song “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. In other words, If i keep going with making games for the public, the only thing they are going to tell me are things that I can change and what skill I need to work on. That is the amazing part of designing video games. The public and society is what shapes video games to what makes them amazing today. Although this may bring up a topic over “Popular games are not good ones”, BUT THAT IS WHAT MAKES INDIE GAMES AWESOME!! Indie games are, in my opinion, an extension to the game designer. When an indie game designer makes his games, they put their personal experiences, their personalities, and their ideas into an interactive game that they can share. I was never a big fan of indie games. But then i saw a documentary of the developers behind “Super Meat Boy” and “Fez” and other popular indie games. In the documentary, they described what it takes to be an indie developer. An early part of their childhood was put into their games. In the game “fez”, the developer tries to put as many tetris patterns in the walls as he could. In some other game that I forgot the name of, This man put part of his childhood dreams into the video game. I realized that one must have personal experiences in the real world in order to relate to something in a game. In my early years, I never really lived much. I had just about no friends, and always lived in my bedroom where i would play smackdown vs raw on my playstation 2. The only thing that happened to me in my childhood was going out of my bedroom window when i was grounded by my mother. I can’t really get any ideas out of that. Maybe if I think about it more something might come up. Anyway, I am now trying my best to get out of the house, or at least invite more friends over. maybe something good will happen!
