Hello, I’m Stijn! I work on music and audio for Underhero.
Today I would like to show you how I make sounds and audio for the game:
1- Darkness
What does darkness sound like? Nothing! But for Underhero I made a deep spooky drone for a particular dark area.
It was made by pitching a recording of howling wind way down. Then I made the volume of that sound go up and down every few seconds. To give the sound a more consistent low tone I added a Super Mario World like tuba sample I once made under it.
2- Going through walls
We wanted a sound for when a ghost goes through a wall. We also wanted it to slightly comedic and cute. So I made a “plop!” sound with my mouth. I gave it a bunch of reverb and turned that back into a single audio file. Then I let the pitch of that audio clip fluctuate like an extreme vibrato. Finally I gave that a bit of an echo to make it a little spooky.
3- Flame Ignition
I didn’t have a recording of a flame erupting so I had to be a bit creative. I took a crackling fireplace, a car engine and me coughing. It took a lot of editing, messing with pitch and adding specific filters to get something which actually sounded like a flame ignition.
Thank you for reading!
