A lot of people confuse food sensitivity with food allergy, but they’re not the same thing.
- Peanut allergy:
- Involves the immune system.
- Can cause hives, swelling, breathing difficulties, or even anaphylaxis.
- Life‑threatening and requires strict avoidance and emergency medication.
- Peanut sensitivity (intolerance):
- Does not involve the immune system.
- The body struggles to digest peanuts properly.
- Symptoms are usually stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or diarrhoea.
- Uncomfortable, but not life‑threatening.
So when I say I have a peanut sensitivity, I mean peanuts make me ill, but I don’t have an allergy. It’s important to respect both conditions—even if sensitivity isn’t dramatic, it’s still real.
