PlanetScape Development, a general outline of things to come

Hey all, I wanted to talk a little bit about the overall progress of Planetscape in it’s development. I make a lot of posts about current updates I’m working on or that I am releasing, but I haven’t yet talked about the development as a whole.

To begin to understand my proccess in developing PlanetScape, you must first look at the overall goal. The goal of this project: To create a unique adventure experience where players have full control on what to do and how to get there. Ok, so maybe that’s not the set in stone goal, but i’ve been working with some form of that sentence in mind. What I want players to take away from planetScape is a new type of storytelling experience, one where the player decides not only what will happen, but how it willl happen. Obviously, Minecraft was a big influence on this game, it was beautiful, and the ability to explore and create a world all your own was huge to me. But what it was missing to me was story. I want players to be able to tell there own story in Planetscape, beggining, middle, and end. It’s great in theory to have an endless game in something like Minecraft, but you never play forever do you? Eventually you tire and put down the game. But for me this was not very satisfying, I wanted a reason to continue doing the things I was doing, something to fight/build for, or against.

In PlanetScape, you will be able to build, and destroy, every part of the world you inhabit. You will be able to befriend, or kill any NPC you encounter, and you will be able to end the game, or not, the way you choose.

So how will this unfold? Here is the general outline. This is not a list of every feature coming to PlanetScape, just a vague idea of how everything will piece together. I’ve seperated them by updates, here we go:

  • 0.1.6: Overall performance enhancment, random dungeons, and a directives panel

  • 0.1.7: Developing more story content and enhancing playability (this means making it easier to pickup and play),1 new layer (the acid pit), and 3 new bosses (slimer boss, mole boss, and ghoul boss). Also switching over to some form of Account based savegame files, likely using either your game jolt account, or a personal game account that can be connected to your game jolt account.

  • 0.1.8: Adding 2 more layers (the core, and the void), and at least 1 Ending to the game.

  • 0.1.9: Adding All other endings, final boss, and credits

  • 1.9.5 Add any minor additional features, this is the final game, without testing.

  • 1.0 this is the complete version of the game, all major bugs have been cleared.

  • further development: After the game is released, I will release updates to fix any minor errors that may arise, as well as work multiplayer into the PC version of the game.

Again, this is not set in stone, some things may change as time goes on, but this is the direction the game is headed generally. There is no set date on when any of these updates will be released yet, but I’ll keep you all in the loop
