Hey guys. I’ve been kind of all over the place in terms of what I’ve been working on. As Dredex mentioned in his dev log, we’ve been busy adding more middle frames for Jack’s attacking animations. The hardest part was creating a system that was flexible and required minimal new code. What I have is working so far, but we’ll see how it holds up when more complex actions need animations. So far, we have the combos for the great sword, dagger and bow animating in game. The dagger and bow still need their heavy attack animations and we still need to look at mid air attack animations, but we’ve made really good progress.
Other than the animations, other important factors that go into an attack still need work. The actual hit box needs to be adjusted to match the range of the attack. Since we’re adjusting things here, I think it would be really to neat to adjust how some of the attacks work as well. With how the current system works, you can only hit one enemy at a time. I think it would be cool if we could find a way to make an attack hit multiple enemies at the same time. Something like that for the great sword would be really awesome!
Outside of Jack, I added enemy hit and death animations for the bat and the two thief enemies we have in the game. The hit animations are pretty standard, but I feel like we really diversified the death animations. There is a different animation for the different types of attacks. As of now, there is one for dagger, one for melee attacks and one for magic attacks. I’d show you, but I think that’s a job for the head animator on his next dev log. Adding the animations was a domino effect of work. The enemy code we had wasn’t…ideal. In order to get the animations, I essentially had to rewrite the enemies’ code. It was a lot of work for a few additions, but I think it had some positive effects outside of the animations. The bat enemy is a bit smarter than it was before and can navigate around objects to get to the player now!
This game feels like an insurmountable problem, but with each minor goal we get one step closer! I don’t know what the end of this year has in store for us, but I can’t wait to release and see what you guys think of it!
