I’ve always loved the idea of discovering lore books in games. To me, even if they aren’t thoroughly read or explicitly enjoyed, they still provide an extra layer of life to the world. The idea of characters within the game’s world recounting events, reciting stories, or rambling about some new discovery, helps to establish a world that has existed before you “Press start to begin”, and will continue to exist after the credits roll.
Poetry plays a large part in the literary lore of The Ballad of Lone Phoenix. I’ve always loved writing random rhymes as a hobby, so the idea that I could write poetry for the lore books in my game was exciting. There are currently 41 lore books in the game, 34 of them are poems. I plan on adding many more books before the final release of the game, but the ratio of poetry to non-poetry books will hopefully stay close to what it is now.
Since there will be so much emphasis on the poetic lore books, I think it’s a good idea to share some of my favorite in-game books with you now.
So there you have it, a few of my favorite poems that will be in The Ballad of Lone Phoenix. When I release the demo you can expect to find a lot more like this. (Some that have a more serious tone, some that are even dumber and more nonsensical)
Question of the week:
Have you come across any games with really neat lore books? If so, let me know in the comments, I’d love to be able to check out how other games handle this sort of thing.
Thanks for reading! Talk to you next week!
