Before we get into this, I would like to say a disclaimer:
This is the first mainline Pokemon game I am playing from start to finish. Although I have a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to things like type matchups, I know next to nothing when it comes to this specific game. Please, don't backseat, and don't give me tips unless I explicitly ask for them.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get started.
The first day of my Pokemon Emerald playthrough began with finishing the early story progression. After that, I chose my starter: Torchic. After a bit of stumbling around, I found my way to May, and began the first trainer battle. I knew I would win easily. What I didn't know, however was that I would win with 2 crits in a row. Thanks, focus energy.
After that, I made my way down route 103 towards Petalburg City. In the process, I caught Poochyena, Zigzagoon, Taillow, and Wurmple. After completing all of the story progression in Petalburg, I moved on and went through the Petalburg Woods, and caught Silcoon and Marill. Then, I went right into the battle with Roxanne, and here is where you might notice an issue.
Roxanne is a rock type gym.
All of my Pokemon only know normal, fire, and flying type moves.
Needless to say, I didn't stand a chance.
Not knowing what to do from here, I went to route 116, did the few trainer battles that I could, and caught Nincada and Whismur, hoping one of them could be taught bullet seed with the TM I had acquired previously. Unfortunately, they couldn't. Not knowing what to do, I decided to level up my Torchic until it evolved into Combusken.
If you're an expert, you know what's about to happen.
Torchic evolves into Combusken at level 16. When it evolves, it can learn double kick. Double kick is a fighting type move. Rock type Pokemon are weak to fighting type moves.
Knowing I had already won, I triumphantly walked into Roxanne's gym, asked for a rematch, and swept with Combusken and double kick, only getting hit once by her Nosepass, and day 1 came to a close.
