POPGOES Arcade 2020 Edition - So, what's going on? Here's an "FAQ"!


Hi guys!

First things first: POPGOES is back! That's right... I am dedicated to releasing more POPGOES content with an incredible new team this year. Big things are planned but I think I need to clarify some things, so I have set up this preemptive "frequently asked questions", or an FAQ. Obviously these questions haven't been asked yet, but I know that if they weren't made clear they would certainly be asked, and... frequently.

So here you go. It's gigantic, so maybe only read the questions you're interested in:


Q: What's going on?

A: The POPGOES series is being rebooted. I'm making POPGOES Arcade and POPGOES again, with a new team. I'm not remastering them, I'm REBOOTING them. Meaning the games will have new models, designs, gameplay mechanics, and story. The game will still be familiar and the changes should not be too jarring (they should be direct upgrades), but don't get the wrong idea: These aren't re-releases or remakes. This is a full-on reboot.


Q: Is this an April Fools Joke?

A: No, this is actually happening. My April Fools joke this year comes from my Tweet yesterday that said "It's time to return to the Dead Forest." This was of course referencing POPGOES 2: The Dead Forest, but if you've watched the new trailer you'll know that The Dead Forest is actually referring to the arcade game you play in POPGOES Arcade 2020 Edition. That's the joke. Hilarious stuff, really.


Q: What is POPGOES Arcade 2020 Edition?

A: POPGOES Arcade 2020 Edition, or PA2020 for short, is the first instalment of the POPGOES reboot. The first game I ever released was POPGOES Arcade, back in April 2016. It acted as a teaser for POPGOES but it was an actual (pretty decent) game you could play through, with a secret ending and everything. So we're basically doing that again, but with content and quality that you'd expect from a 2020 FNAF fangame.

As stated on the description on this page, PA2020 is a FULL REBOOT. It is a new game, built from the ground up. New gameplay, new story, new characters, new endings.


Q: Who is working on the reboot?

A: The POPGOES reboot has a very small, tight team, consisting of talented people who have all worked on fangames in the past. I'm working on this more than any game I've ever worked on before (I am the sole pixel artist for PA2020, for example), but I would not be able to do any of this without some other incredible people. Joining me are Emil Macko (creator of Five Nights at Candy's), Garrett Tube (creator of FredBear & Friends), Vitch (creator of The Web of Cogs and Oil), as well as Sian Mewburn (Turntail, an incredible artist who also happens to be my girlfriend), and some other awesome people. All of these team members have worked on POPGOES Arcade 2020 Edition, as well as the upcoming POPGOES 2020 Edition.


Q: Tell us more about POPGOES 2020 Edition!

A: POPGOES 2020 Edition is the upcoming reboot/remake of POPGOES. We have worked on this since the 1st of January. We still have a lot of work to do for it, but POPGOES Arcade 2020 Edition should be enough to tide you over until it's finished. Right?

POPGOES 2020 Edition has a new, ambitious vision. It will look and feel very different from the original game, because I honestly don't think the original has lived up to today's standards at all. And because of this, I ask that you, as fans, try to embrace the changes that we eventually show off, and that nostalgia doesn't manipulate your opinion. I mean, brace yourselves, because Popgoes the Weasel and his friends are going to be redesigned from scratch. Not just remodelled, but completely redesigned. I know that this could upset and maybe confuse some fans but this is what I've wanted to do for a long time. So please... criticism is always fine but try to be fair when we start show to things off!


Q: Why not just make a sequel?

A: A sequel is not out of the question, especially with this new team. But at this point I wouldn't dare explore the future without fixing the past. POPGOES can and must be better before the story is expanded. So, again, a POPGOES 2 could happen after all of this. But for now, I'd like to introduce a new POPGOES 1. Because you never know, it COULD be just as exciting as a sequel.


Q: So what's canon now?

A: Technically nothing you've played in the past is truly canon anymore, as we're starting from the ground up. But to keep things easy, you can assume that MOST of the original POPGOES story (POPGOES + POPGOES Arcade) is still canon. The reboots will change some things around but it should still be very familiar. Some "retcons" here and there, but the general gist of the plot will be the same.

That being said, ALL sequel projects, which includes POPGOES Arcade 2, POPGOES 2 and POPGOES Finale, are not canon. They are not a part of the reboot nor do they share any story elements that will be told in the reboot.


Q: Is this really in Clickteam?

A: Yes, this entire game is rendered in Blender and programmed in Clickteam Fusion. Emil has created a shader for Clickteam that accurately reproduces light reflections in real-time, giving the illusion of 3D models with realistic materials. It ends up looking like a Blender animation or Unreal Engine gameplay. It's pretty sick.


Q: What does this mean for Chef Wanted?

A: For those who aren't aware, Emil, Sian and I have also been working on another FNAF fangame called Chef Wanted, separate from our POPGOES and FNAC properties. To be blunt, Chef Wanted has been put on the backburner while Emil and I focus on FNAC and POPGOES. Chef Wanted was always a sort of "side project", but it did turn into something much bigger. If you have been following the dev log, you'll know that we semi-recently decided to revamp all of the visuals in the game. This was Sian's role, but it has unfortunately been much more than she can handle. And this makes sense; hundreds of unique sprites had to be made from scratch for it. So when we get back to Chef Wanted, we'll need to restructure some things to make development of it more efficient and healthy.

Chef Wanted isn't cancelled. Too much of it has been worked on for it to be thrown away. We will get back to it eventually, but it is no longer a priority. At the moment, the POPGOES reboot is my priority, and FNAC4 is Emil's.
