Postmortem

Vectagon has been out for a few weeks now. It did ok - it’s been played a few thousand times, and posted on RPS and a few other places, which I’m incredibly proud of.

There’s a tonne of things I should have done differently. Here’s three!

First up - don’t release your game on Christmas day. I did this for me more than the players, because I just wanted the game out, in some form, and it seemed romantic to release it as a Christmas present. However, it turns out that people don’t go on Kongregate on Christmas day. My motivation was that I probably couldn’t have released it any other day, else it’d still be rotting on my hard drive, but I should built up hype for the launch, and then released it.

Second - the insults at the end of a game don’t work. I added them for a gaming warehouse party event, and they were a big hit. It was stupid, social and funny. However, people don’t like being insulted, especially when they’re sitting at home alone, and the game often feels unfair.

Third - Vectagon wasn’t the game I wanted to make right back at the start. I wanted to make something hypnotic, and it became an infinite runner so quickly that I barely even considered anything else. The infinite runner side of the game, and the tunnel side of the game oppose each other. Apart, they would have made two very fun games.
