Programming the NPCs - The Ballad of Lone Phoenix

I was hoping to make these weekly updates feel like professional press releases or something. But I’m terrible at that writing style. So these updates will end up being my semi-coherent ramblings that hopefully provide some insight into the game.

The ai for the non-playable characters in The Ballad of Lone Phoenix has been incredibly difficult to program. Each character will have their own path that they follow as the day goes by. But the paths will constantly evolve during the day depending on what happens. AI has never been my specialty, but I feel like I’m learning a lot as I go and I’ll be able to make it work.

I really want to try and make the world feel alive. And one of the best ways to do that is to fill the world with characters that feel alive. So I feel like making the NPCs feel life-like will be an incredibly important part of the game. So even though I’ve spent a lot of time programming the AI, I expect to spend a lot of time on the AI in the future.

Thanks for reading my ramblings, I’ll be releasing a small demo on November 12th, so I hope you look forward to playing it then.
