Hi guys!
Geez, has it really been this long since I’ve done one of these? Progress Report #9 came out back in November last year! Golly! I guess it’s about time I did another one of these, right?
So, after a very, very long time of overthinking the story of the final game and whatnot and practically ripping my hair out every time I restarted all over from scratch, I think I finally have a good idea, and I wanted to share it with you all.
Recently someone commented saying that they liked how I was experimenting with this fan-game, that I was throwing random ideas at the wall and seeing what stuck and what didn’t, and that really inspired me. That was exactly my intention with the multiplayer demo. It was something no other major Undertale fan-game had attempted yet. It was something new and fresh, and I’m proud of it.
For the past few months, I’ve been non-stop trying to create an amazing story for Don’t Forget that would be absolutely, breathtakingly awesome. Of course, I eventually realized quite recently that I suck at it. I’ve scrapped so many different plotlines that I’ve filled 3 entire notebooks already with useless ideas, as well as a bunch of mindmaps, diagrams, concept art, etc…
I thought that I would never make anything good enough.
But then, going back to that comment from earlier, I realized what I was doing wrong.
I was completely ignoring my philosophy of trying to do something different with this fan-game. I want this fan-game to really stand out from the crowd. There’s lots of massive, linear fan-games out there, why should mine be too?
So you’re probably wondering… what am I getting at, exactly?
Well, think about it. Every single major UT fan-game has one thing in common: they’re linear, just like Undertale. Sure, you can say there’s three or more different routes, there’s ‘player choice’, and even various different endings they might have planned. But… you’re still going through the same sequence every time. If you were to play the game again after beating it once, you would still have to go through the same world again in pretty much the same order, regardless of what new route you take.
Now, I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with this. In fact, the linear style works really well, and all of these fangames look awesome. But… no one has really tried to deviate from it, as far as I know…
Which is why I’m going to try and change things up a bit. Don’t Forget is going to be an open-world game. As in, you can go anywhere, at any time, in any order.
Now, don’t freak out or anything.
There’s still a story, of course there is.
And Gaster will still be there, of course he will.
And multiplayer will DEFINITELY be there, of course it will.
But I think it would be a really neat concept. An open-world undertale-styled game? How awesome would THAT be? And luckily for me, the story doesn’t have to be as gigantic and grand as I was pressuring myself for it to be. It’ll still be important, but the gameplay is even more important. Development can finally be fun!
And I have a bunch of awesome stuff in store for the multiplayer, too. How does creating your own custom map that can be played online sound? That’s right, I have a map creator planned! With it, you can create your own maps and compile them as a file. Then, you can upload the file somewhere and others can download it! Once they have it, they can load it in the game and play it ONLINE with other players! There will NEVER be a shortage of content as long as there’s creative players willing to make maps!
I’m also planning on giving players the ability to log in to their GameJolt accounts and submit scores to an online leaderboard on the game page from some possible minigames I might add. It would really add a feeling of friendly competition in the community to see who can get the highest score! These minigames would be things like infinite fights where you have to dodge attacks until you die or something like that.
So with all that being said, please, tell me what you all think of this down below, I’d love to hear your thoughts! You guys are the reason I’m making this, after all!
Anyway, that’s all from me, feel free to ask questions about the game, I’ll try and answer them to the best of my ability.
Have a nice day!
