Hi guys!
After some thinking and planning of the game, I just wanted to clarify what type of game this will be now that I have a clearer idea of it.
I’m not incredibly sure if “open-world” was the best term to use to describe the game in the last devlog. The more I thought about it, “sandbox” was probably the better word.
The current overworld I have planned for the game isn’t incredibly expansive or anything. It’s still quite big, but I don’t think “open-world” is the right word to describe it.
Think back to Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Sunshine. You know how those games had a HUB world and then entrances to new areas? That’s basically the kind of thing I have planned for Don’t Forget right now. I want to have a HUB world that allows you to access different areas. And as such, I don’t think “open-world” is the best term to describe that. The proper term is “sandbox”, if I’m not mistaken.
So I want to clarify that Don’t Forget is more of a sandbox game than an open-world game. It really depends on what your personal definiton of open-world is. To me, an open-world game has stuff like massive fields and focuses on exploration. Don’t Forget won’t really have that. The game has a goal you must achieve, and you can complete that goal in any order you choose and find a bunch of secrets along the way. It’s not focused entirely on exploration. (Don’t worry though, multiplayer is still going to be exactly what I promised!)
However, I’m not dropping the open-world Undertale idea at all. In fact, I want to take this time to announce A NEW project! I discussed this once before, but I want to confirm it here.
I’m going to remake Uppertale to be an open-world game.
That’s right! You know that screw-up of a game known as Uppertale? I’m gonna remake it to finally redeem myself. I’m working on that new UT engine of mine, and in order to test it out before I work on DF, I thought Uppertale was the best option to try it out with.
I don’t even know if “remake” is the right term. Reboot, maybe? I want it to focus entirely on exploration, and not a dumb story about time-travel. The time machine will still be in it, but it’s not what the game revolves around, so it technically isn’t a remake in that regard.
But either way, Uppertale is coming back, and better than ever.
So look forward to THAT whenever I do it.
And when that’s all wrapped up and I’m satisfied with my engine, I’ll work on Don’t Forget full-time.
Once DF is done, I’m not sure what’s next. I’m really considering moving on to original projects finally. Who knows.
Anyway, that’s all for now, folks.
Have a nice day!
