Prototypes and how I'm going about making this game


So, in my description I mentioned how I'm working on a prototype, what does this mean in this case specifically? Let me tell you.

What Does This Prototype Mean?

So, to prepare myself to make this game (And to learn more about GameMaker Studio 2) I'm gonna create several "Prototypes" on the game to get certain goals done. I'm currently 2/3 on Prototype 1, this means I have completed 2 out of my 3 goals for Prototype 1. Let's go into some simple questions about this Prototype system.

How Many Prototypes Will There Be?

From the goals I want, I think there will be about 5-7 Prototypes before I start working on the actual game.

What Are The 3 Goals For The First Prototype?

The 3 goals I have set myself to do for the first Prototype is:

Setting Spawn Positions:

Basically, this means setting the spawn locations for each map for each character that is playing. For instance, for Map01, I would set the spawn positions to whatever coordinates I want. I set my own custom function for this and with a little tweaking it works like a charm. So for this Prototype, the spawn system is complete, but for the full game, it's only about 90% complete (I'll explain why in a second).

State System:

Just setting up a state system that can make the player go into whatever state. Had a little trouble at first, but after a day, day and a half it was done.

Basic Movement:

Here's the one I haven't finished yet. I'm having a little problem with gravity and whatnot, but it should be settled out when I rewrite the movement code. Should be finished within next week I would say.

What Are The Goals For The Next Prototypes?

I wouldn't call the next one's "Goals" per say because goals are more specific. I would call these more "Categories" because they give a general gist. Anyways here they are:

Prototype 2:

Remember how I said for the full game, the spawning system is only 90%? Yeah, this is to get that last 10%, which could be difficult. Basically, I'm gonna do the stuff with spawning bots and stuff onto the maps (No A.I. yet) and maybe find out how to set up states for said bots (Maybe a parent object?).

Prototype 3:

Complex movement with players/bots. This includes shooting, diving, meleeing, and such.

Prototype 4:

Basic A.I.'s for the bots, also for the bots to interact with the states.

Prototype 5:

Polish. Main menu stuff, options, ETC.

That's all I can think of accomplishing right now. Note: Each Prototype, I'll build and rewrite the code from the ground up and then build the new stuff. I'll do this until I feel like I can't optimize the old code anymore, then I'll just focus on the new stuff only. I think that about covers it for this post, I'll let you guys know what's happening with Prototypes and whatnot sometimes, and until next time, adieu.
