putting pokemon into modern day animal catagories

gen 1

so as you may know we classify animals in 6 different categories. mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates (technically there are many different types of invertebrates but I'm just gonna put them all under one roof). however, because this is pokemon I'm gonna add 4 more humanoid (for pokemon like gardevoir), plants (for pokemon like sunflora), inanimate (for pokemon like klefki), and ??? for pokemon that don't fit any category. also if I have any interesting thing to say on said pokemon then I'll mention it. without further ado, lets take a look

bulbasaur line, reptiles

okay so we're already starting off with a doozy, the first question was "is this an animal or a plant". and i decided that this was more of an animal with plant parts than an actual plant. the next question was "is this a reptile or an amphibian". this was harder to answer because all three have "saur" in the name, implying that they're dinosaurs. but then they move like toads and even have toad-like skin. at the end of the day, I decided to put them under reptiles since they had a few more reptilian traits than amphibious

charmander line, reptiles

squirtle line, reptiles

caterpie line, invertebrates

weedle line, invertebrates

pidgey line, birds

spearow line, birds

ekans line, reptiles

pikcahu line, mammals

sandshrew line, mammals

nidoran line (both male and female), mammals

clefairy line, mammals

vulpix line, mammals

jigglypuff line, mammals

now for jigglypuff and wigglytuff I almost put them in the inanimate category because they are mostly based on balloons, but looking at their pokedex entries show that they have fur and animal like tendencies. plus pufferfish can expand themselves with air so its not implausible for actual animals to inflate themselves

zubat line, mammals

oddish line, plants

paras line, invertebrates

so the thing with paras and parasect is the question of "which is the actual pokemon, the crab or the mushroom?" and looking at the pokedex seems to show that the mushroom itself isn't a pokemon but are merely taking the bodies of these pokemon, therefore I put them in the invertebrate category

venonat line, invertebrates

diglett line, mammals

so I had a bit of a time with these because I don't really know what they're supposed to be, now the pokedex lists them as the mole pokemon so I guess they're supposed to be moles and therefore mammals

meowth line, mammals

psyduck, mammal

okay so I had to classify psyduck and golduck separately because they are so different, as for psyduck even though he has the word DUCK in his name, he's more like a platypus than anything, so I put him in the mammal category

golduck, reptile

okay so, yes duck is in the name but there is NOW WAY this is a bird, looking at it makes it look more like a lizard, crocodile, or even dinosaur than anything, so I put it in the reptile category, hell one could argue that it might be an amphibian, like a large salamander or something. but I'm more comfortable putting it in the reptile category

mankey line, mammals

growlithe line, mammals

poliwag line, amphibians

abra line, ???

what even are these? they're kind of humanoid, they have some mammalian traits, abra looks like he could be some kind of lizard, it's a mess that I can't follow so these three go in the ??? category

machop line, humanoid

bellsprout line, plants

tentacool line, invertebrates

geodude line, inanimate

now I almost categorized golem as a reptile, but on further inspection its really just a rock with reptilian limbs and head so I think he belongs in inanimate with the other two

ponyta line, mammals

slowpoke line, mammals

these two were tough because they have scaly skin like reptiles, live near water like amphibians, and are labeled "the hermit crab pokemon" however upon further inspection these two are actually based on hippos so I think putting them in the mammal category makes the most sense

magnemite line, inanimate

farfetch'd, bird

doduo line, birds

seel line, mammals

grimer line, inanimate

shellder line, invertebrates

gastly, inanimate

haunter and gengar, ???

now ghastly is a ball of gas, and gas is inanimate. but are haunter and gengar also gas? I mean the pokedex says haunter's tounge is made of gas. but the pokedex also says that gengar is somebody's spirit, but they aren't really humanoid so I guess these two are going in ???

onix, reptile

drowzee, mammal

hypno, humanoid

krabby line, invertebrates

voltorb line, inanimate

exeggcute line, plants

so there's this ongoing debate with people arguing whether exeggcute is a bunch of seeds or a bunch of eggs, after taking careful consideration I decided they were seeds because they learn quite a few seed moves and evolve into a plant, so I put them in the plant category

cubone line (and kangaskan), mammals

so these were a tricky one, its near confirmed that kangaskan is related to cubone and marrowak but what are they? they have scales and lay eggs, but they have maternal instincts and pouches. after careful consideration, I decided that they were mammals as there are mammals that lay eggs and mammals that have scales, plus kangaskan is very clearly based on a kangaroo so I'm comfortable putting these guys in the mammals category

hitmonlee, humanoid

hitmonchan, humanoid

lickitung, reptile

koffing line, inanimate

rhyhorn line, mammals

chansey, ???

tangla, plant

horsea line, fish

goldeen line, fish

staryu line, invertebrates

mr mime, humanoid

scyther, invertebrate

jynx, humanoid

electabuzz, mammal

magmar, ???

pinsir, invertebrate

tauros, mammal

magikarp line, fish

lapras, reptile

so this was a wired one as it could be a fish or amphibian but its based on the loch ness monster and sea turtles so reptile it is

ditto, ???

eevee line, mammals

porygon, ???

it's literally data, does that make it inanimate, its supposed to be in the shape of a duck so is it a bird? what is this thing!

omanyte line, invertebrates

kabuto line, invertebrates

areodatcyl, reptile

snorlax, mammal

articuno, zapdos, and moltres, birds

dratini line, reptiles

one could argue that dratini and dragonair could be fish, amphibians or invertebrates. but they're described as serpents which usually refers to snakes IE reptiles

mew and mewtwo, mammals

they're cats.....just anthro cats

and that's it for the gen one mons, do you agree with my choices? disagree? let me know in the comments and stay tuned because I'm doing jhoto tomorrow
