THE PLOTS
They set up ideas, concepts, plots, and arcs that genuinely interest me, but they either forgot they exist, ignore them, retcon them, rush them, or fumble the execution. Especially with Hazbin. Hazbin Hotel had a chance to explore the ideas of Good and Evil, and the blurred, thin lines between the two, yet they just resort to a basic, surface level plot that is so face value. It sets up pointless mysteries to try and pretend it’s a deep and mysterious show, but it isn’t. With Helluva Boss, they set up a fun show idea. But they just abandon it for the most part in the later episodes. It could have been like, a kill of the week type of show. The style of comedy Helluva leans for and it’s writing would suit this kind of show but no it’s a animated drama “comedy”.
THE (main) CHARACTERS
Both shows have a cast of characters that all stay underdeveloped, or are well developed, and have arcs set up for them, but the shows just don’t explore said arcs, or they reset their character and growth completely. The shows try to make you feel bad for Blitz and Charlie, but I can’t, due to how shallowly written they are. They can be summed up in TWO words, daddy issues. With a bit of basic relationship drama and a bunch of swears and sex jokes sprinkled in. The supporting characters, are all pretty much the same to be honest, with some exemptions.
THE VILLAINS
Both shows lack a good, intimidating, well written villain. In my opinion a good villain is what makes some stories so good. And they had a really good concept with the main villain of Hazbin. Adam. “The First Man”. I feel like they could have made it to where Adam, while he was with his wife in the garden, was betrayed , instead of being a dick from the start, show us his evolution. Start in the garden, and he’s a genuinely good guy, and his wife however, is a over controlling, narcissist who betrayed him with Lucifer. He’s alone. And his second wife died the same. He’s alone again. And he’s alike for a time time, seething. He tried his very best to appeal to his wife but she didn’t care for him. He hated Lucifer. And now not only is he a bitter, angry jackass, his motive isn’t just boredom, his real motive as to why he exterminates sinners is hate. His real goal is to kill Lucifer and his daughter ti end their bloodline. He hated the Morningstar’s. This would give him a reason to be a jerk to Lucifer’s daughter, he hates them. Maybe if they made his real personality more subtle, like during the first meeting between Charlie and Adam, he starts off nice, but throughout her explanation, he pretends to care, but gives her dirty looks behind her back occasionally. And at the end, he says something like “I’m sorry, there’s nothing I can really do.” Just to mess with her, due to his grudge with her father. And I’m not saying change his personality entirely, but just make him slowly start to show off his personality. And leave out the stupid “Dickmaster” stuff, and make bud final death speech like, a genuine villain speech. It’s that easy. Boom. I gave him an actual origin, motive, depth, end goal, and made it less obvious that he’s supposed to be the big bad of season one, that easily. As for Helluva…I liked Striker. Pretty cool guy. I’m pretty sure they are intending to give more about info his character and story in the next Helluva Season but I don’t really know. He’s well voice acted, but I wish they did more with him. And have slightly more reasoning behind his hatred of Royalty and backstory.
This, for the time being, is the first of a 3 part rant series. Let me know your thoughts, argue with me, whatever. I am up for discussion on why you think my take is wrong. Thanks for reading 😊
(Sry for grammar and spelling mistakes, I typed this on a phone, pretty rushed lmao)
