So, I’m writing this quickly bc uhhh, well, I didn’t think I’d have to. But, I do. So, I’m putting it here in writing, and when people force my hand, I can link to it.
The haps:
I’ve had about 6 people approach me this week asking some question about DSaF 4 and this has been constant over the course of the last few months. I really don’t know how to make it clearer that there won’t be a DSaF 4. Most commenters have even phrased their comments with “when”, as if DSaF 4 is a certainty?
I know I really didn’t think I’d actually make DSaF 3, but DSaF 2 left too many questions unanswered, hence why I had to return to the series. DSaF 3 leaves nothing unanswered. I’m happy with things as-is. The ending of DSaF 3 is final. The trilogy is complete.
I’m putting this in clear writing. I am working on Dialtown right now. I will not be returning to DSaF. I get that not everyone who followed DSaF is gonna be interested in Dialtown, but it’s similar enough in terms of writing (and y’know, phone headed dudes, I guess?) that most of you should enjoy it.
Best of all, I can actually make money for my work, this time. I work full time, and tbh, I have 6 hours free each night. To work on a genuine fourth DSaF game and release it THIS year or early next year, I’d have to give up all of my free time for free. Please understand how little I want to do this.
For this reason, I can also promise you: While I can’t see into the future, nor tell how successful Dialtown is, I know this much… If Dialtown does poorly, I will move onto something else, but I won’t be returning to DSaF. Seriously, it’s over.
I’m working on a project that’s fresh, genuinely different, and something I’m passionate about now. This might be my cynicism coming out, but… I saw one comment say “After Dialtown, when you make DSaF 4-” and I need to stop you right there. If you’re considering mentally boycotting Dialtown in the hopes that I’ll return to DSaF after, I’m afraid that’d be a fruitless endeavour.
The game has a real live Steam page that’s up right now and should release later this year. I’ve already sank months of work into it, and while it’s hard to find development time on top of work, it’s shaping up nicely so far. I post updates on the steam page every 1-2 weeks, so I’d recommend you follow the steam page for future updates. I also post smaller dev updates on the Dialtown Twitter Account if you’re on twitter.
I appreciate that DSaF left an impact on people, but I worked on DSaF every day for 3 years. I still very much hold a fondness for Dave, Jack and all of the others, but recognize it’s time to let them rest. I apologize sincerely for the sternness/bluntness of this devlog, but the sooner and clearer that this is said, the better. Follow Dialtown’s steam page and/or my twitter account if you wish to follow future projects of mine. This GJ account is now purely archival. I’m sorry, but please don’t get your hopes up. I’m done with fangames.
