I continue to work and progress on the roadmap little by little. I haven't been very successful yet, but the important thing is that I'm not standing still.

This month has been devoted entirely to working on Mystery Chamber Classic. What for? You'll find out already in today's month results.

MC Classic code refactoring

I dedicated the first half of this month to a major rework of the MC Classic source code.

I did it for a reason: the game was made back in 2015, and the quality of its code leaves much to be desired.

As you know, I plan to open the source code of most of my games, which will give the community the opportunity to release modifications. MC Classic has a definite potential for this, plus its source code has been long awaited by some people in the community. I wouldn't want its state to affect the quality of mods and the experience of their authors, so it was decided to dig through all the code and bring it up to my current standards.

Now, the code has a more understandable and convenient structure. The number of frames in the project has been minimized (for example, now all battles are combined into one frame), a lot of identical and ridiculous code has been removed and reworked, all code has been sorted by groups and so on. In general, the code and logic itself has been optimized, and the game has been technically improved.

Creating modifications will definitely be more comfortable now than if I had provided the public with code version 1.2 or lower.

Update 1.3 for MC Classic

After refactoring the game code, I continued to work on updating the game. Since the whole game was completely reworked (100% of the code was affected), it was necessary to continue debugging and refining it. In parallel with debugging, I worked on improving and polishing the game.

One day I took a fresh look at version 1.2 and realized what a shoddy job I had done.

  • A crumpled ending with an airplane that isn't really an ending yet;

  • A level where the player just falls down and nothing interesting happens;

  • A visual component of a hellish level where there is no background and the platforms are repainted concrete blocks;

  • An abrupt transition to the final battle;

  • Useless and shoddy New Game+ mode.

Maybe the game is old, and I try to keep its “classic” look, but to spoil the game with such strange things seems to me just unacceptable. Unfortunately, at the time of update 1.2 I had not yet realized the strangeness of the innovations.

Now all these things have been fixed in version 1.3.

Oh no...

The loop system (New Game+ mode) has been thoroughly redesigned. The game complications from loops have been moved to separate modes, or rather to difficulties.

Special difficulties

At first, I wanted to remove the loops completely, but then I changed my mind and put them in a separate mode as well. This time there will be a final goal: to complete 10 loops. You will be given the opportunity to continue, but you will regret it if you continue.

It says, “You'd better turn around and go back.”

Level 6 with the drop down has been completely removed and a new and complete level has taken its place, although not as large as the other levels.

The visual style of the level with climbing up has been significantly improved. Surface sprites have been redrawn and more backgrounds have been added to accompany you throughout the level. (The level structure was not changed, so the surfaces are still rectangular strips)

The ending with the airplane is again a complete ending that definitely completes the game. But nothing prevents you from skipping this ending. Who knows, maybe a completely different ending is waiting for you? However, version 1.2 has already shown it, but unfortunately not as it should be.

A small pre-final level has been added, which will bring you to the very finale, but you will see it in the game itself.

Quick fact: Some of the new stuff was done back in 2023 as part of the canceled 1.2.2 update, but I was blown away that year and the update was abandoned for a long time.

On top of everything, new achievements were added and many other small improvements were made, as well as making a browser version of the game. The update will be released not only on Android and Windows, but also for browsers, namely on Newgrounds, VKontakte and maybe Yandex Games.

Browser version

Update 1.3 along with the game's source code will be released very soon.

I didn't expect the MC Classic update to take over a month, but as it happens. In any case, I'm continuing my progress on the roadmap, and soon enough I'll be able to get started on the updates and special editions of FNwFroggy.
