Retrospective: A Look at Stefannofonari Games' Canceled Projects!

Hello there! Long time no see, eh? This is me, Stefannofornari, writing this Devlog after months of disappearence from Gamejolt. You might even be shocked by the fact that I'm writing a new post after this long! To be fair, even I'm impressed. I didn't expect to write a Devlog so soon, lol. Just kidding.

Anyways, recently I've been thinking about my time developing Visual Novels, and I'm remembering how it was fun to make these fangames. These thoughts came out of nowhere, and they didn't leave my mind (especially due to how I've been playing another Visual Novel recently - Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc! What a great game). However, alongside them came memories of my old - but not forgotten - canceled projects. Believe me, I have lots of Visual Novels that have never seen the light of the day!

So, with that in mind, I decided to write a Devlog listing all my canceled projects. They might have never seen the light of the day, but at least their ideas will be exposed to the world and that is good enough. You can't leave good ideas collect dust, right?

Before I start, I just wanna say one thing. If you want to follow me and know what I'm doing and things like that, don't forget to follow me on Twitter! Here's the link to it: https://twitter.com/StefannoFornari

Now, without further ado, let's start showcasing Stefannofornari Games' canceled projects.

  • FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S: IT'S TIME TO DIE - That's right, there was another Visual Novel for Five Nights at Freddy's planned, and it would be about the third game. Just like the "Survive the Night" Visual Novel, it would be based on a FNaF Song (by DAGames) and would contain references to other FNaF songs. The plot would center on the son of the first game's main character, working as a security guard to sustain his dying family, as he tries to find a way to escape Fazbear's Fright before Springtrap catches him. The game was canceled due to the lack of innovation it had and how I couldn't come up with a proper plot to it. You see, I was trying to find a way to explain things that "Survive the Night" left behind, like that ambiguous post-credits scene, Rekyrts whereabouts after the bad ending, etc. However, I couldn't come up with anything new. I was also trying to come up with a new mechanic to the game, one that would make the game be unique and different from its predecessor. Once again, I didn't have any ideas. Thus, the game was unfortunately canceled, leaving "Survive the Night" as my only FNaF Visual Novel to this day.

  • YANDERE SIMULATOR 3: THE VISUAL NOVEL - Who read my old Devlogs knew that, once upon a time, I considered the possibility of doing a sequel to "Yandere Simulator 2: The Sequel". As I saw many people clamoring for some kind of sequel to the game, I came up the idea of a short Visual Novel that had separate stories, each of them taking place after one of the endings of "Yandere Simulator 2". However, I always planned "Yandere Simulator 2" to be the end of Yandere Simulator as a whole, thus making a sequel to it would break its premise. I thought it was better to leave the ends of that game as they were. What happens after that is up to the player to think about it. Ayano Aishi and Taro Yamada's story is over.

  • COLORTALE: AN UNDERTALE VISUAL NOVEL - Once again, those who read my old Devlogs have probably heard about the announcement of an Undertale Visual Novel: Colortale. It was supposed to be about Frisk after resetting the timeline too much times, thus creating a new reality for Undertale as a whole: one where happiness and joy were gone along with the world's colors. It was up to Frisk - alongside the monster inside her, Chara - to re-create the world they knew... or maybe, put an end to it. To be frank, this idea is still amazing to me and I still lament for not making this Visual Novel. The reason it never saw the light of the day was because Colortale wasn't made by me. It was a story that my friend was writing it at the time, and it was so good that I decided to make a Visual Novel out of it. However, she stopped writing and said she had "not intentions of finishing the story". That marked the end of Colortale, an idea that I still want to see it come to reality one day.

  • LIFE OF ORPHAN - Once again... if you read my Devlogs (and if you followed my Twitter at the time), you know about this one. Life of Orphan was supposed to be my first original Visual Novel. It was being made with a program in Steam called TyranoBuilder, dedicated to Visual Novels. The plot would be centered around an orphan, living on the streets, experiencing the dark and unfair side of life as he tries to maintain hope that everything will be alright. To this day, I think that if I finished this Visual novel it would be my masterpiece in terms of story. It had a strong plot with a great character development and a grand emotional aspect to it. However, as I had to face many daily problems by the time I was developing it I only finished the first half of the game. Soon after that, as I tried to compile the game and make a Demo to it, I faced many unfixable bugs in various things: Main Menu, resolution, graphics, etc. At the same time, the approach I took when it came to the game's art style - which was using real life pictures - didn't come out as I expected. All these problems made me put a halt to its development. However, I still plan on doing something else with Life of Orphan, I still don't know what.

  • BIJUU MIKE'S BAKA! ADVENTURE 2 - Those who played the original BAKA! Adventure know that a sequel was supposed to come out. It would be focused on Bijuu Mike, Clarence and Yandere-Chan with an eyepatch taking a rest at a Youtuber's Hotel, where they would meet various legends such as Markiplier, Jacksepticeye and Officer Booty Lova (Razzbowski). As Yandere-Chan plotted an evil-yet-unknown scheme to take Bijuu Mike for her, Razz would have to start an investigation to unfold it while Bijuu Mike would learn the true meaning of being the lord of Scrubville. The game was canceled due to my busy schedule and due to how I focused all my development time on Life of Orphan. When I canceled Life of Orphan, I got extremely disappointed and canceled Bijuu Mike's BAKA! Adventure 2 as well. Soon after its cancelation, I started doing Yandere Simulator: Midori's Adventure.

  • UNTITLED RAZZBOWSKI GAME - I love both Bijuu Mike and Razzbowski a lot, so it would be unfair if I only planned a Bijuu Mike game but not a Razz one. However, I had no ideas for a Razzbowski game in terms of plot. Sure, a "investigation" gameplay was planned (and it would basically be a watered-down version of Ace Attorney and Danganronpa's investigations), but nothing in terms of story was planned. As I couldn't come up with anything after months, the game was also canceled.

  • DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB: EPISODE YURI & MONIKA - As of now, Doki Doki Literature Club: Episode Natsuki is the only Visual Novel based on Doki Doki I've ever made, and it was my last fangame before I announced that Stefannofornari Games' would start doing only original games. However, before that announcement, there were Visual Novels planned for Yuri and Monika as well. Not a game about the two of them, but two separate games focusing on them. Both of them were canceled, but for different reasons: Episode Yuri was supposed to focus on Yuri before joining the Club, but was ultimately canceled as I couldn't come up with a story for it while developing Episode Natsuki (similar to what happened with the Razzbowski game). Meanwhile, Episode Monika was supposed to take place in the middle of the original Doki Doki and would focus on Monika while she becomes sentient. It was supposed to be a really, reaaaally short visual novel. However, Stefannofornari Games' original games announcement canceled the game. And speaking about original games...

  • PROJECT WRITER (WORKING TITLE) - Project Writer was the original visual novel I was doing on Ren'Py (the same program used to make games like Doki Doki Literature Club), the one that made me stop doing fangames. As Project Writer was supposed to be huge (with 20+ hours of playtime and different outcomes), I couldn't focus on doing fangames here and there, thus I focused all my time on Project Writer. Just like Life of Orphan, I'd say that, if I ever released this game it would be my masterpiece. The story I had planned for it was great and took inspirations from games such as Life is Strange & Heavy Rain and from animes such as Violet Evergarden & A Silent Voice. Everything was going along great, but what canceled the project was any Visual Novel's crucial part: art. I am a music composer, writer and programmer, so I was almost an one man's team... except for the fact that I am not good at drawing. As I didn't have any money to pay for an artist and I did not know how to draw, I had to do the same approach I did with Life of Orphan, but differently: I took pictures of real life scenarios and made a lineart on Photoshop, but even that didn't work out well. With no options left, I had to cancel the game. I still regret doing that: it would have a spectacular and unforgettable story. Still, I plan on ressurrecting it one day.

Well, these are a lot of canceled games, right? I hope you enjoyed reading this entire Devlog! It was pretty huge, but I hope you learned a lot about my past projects and such. Have a good day!
