Hello everyone, I'm Evan, known as Evan Games & EvanYT Channel, and welcome back to Review Everything! Reviewing anything I can do.
This is the first-ever special review on movies in the entire Review Everything Season 2 history!
This special review episode is extraordinary, the one everyone has been waiting for after 8.6 years. First announced in April 2015, then Blumhouse took it in March 2017, and finally, after 6 years, the FNaF Movie was announced in February 2023 and released in Halloween 2023.
Unfortunately, I didn't get an invitation this time, because I was waiting for The Horrible Exorcist: Believer, which you can see the review over here: https://gamejolt.com/p/review-everything-season-2-episode-6-the-exorcist-believer-rqkrtqbc
Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)
Five Nights at Freddy's Movie, for short, FNaF Movie is an American supernatural horror film directed by Our Savior, Emma Tammi (known for THE WIND, Fair Chase), Produced by Jason Blum (known as the producer of M3GAN, Insidious Saga, & The Purge film series) and the game developer legend himself, Scott Cawthon (known as the writers of The Trilogy Books, Fazbear Frights, & the creator of Five Nights at Freddy's series)
Development of a Five Nights at Freddy's film adaptation began in April 2015, with the involvement of Warner Bros. Pictures. Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith were set to produce it, with Gil Kenan announced as director and co-writer. After several production delays, the Warner Bros. version was no longer moving forward and Kenan dropped out of the project. In March 2017, Cawthon tweeted announcing Blumhouse Productions as the film's new production company after Warner Bros. Pictures put the project in turnaround. In May 2017, producer Jason Blum said he was excited and working closely with Cawthon on the film. In June 2017, Kenan said he was no longer directing the film.
In February 2018, Chris Columbus was announced as Kenan's replacement as director and writer, besides producing the film alongside Blum and Cawthon. In August 2018, Cawthon revealed that the first draft of the film's script, which he wrote with co-author of the Five Nights at Freddy's novel trilogy, Kira Breed-Wrisley, was completed, and it would involve the events of the series' first game. That same month, Blum wrote on Twitter that the film was aiming for a 2020 release. In November, Cawthon announced that he scrapped the script, despite being liked by Columbus and Blum, as he "had a different idea for [the story], one that I liked better". It contributed to a further delay to the film, for which Cawthon took full responsibility.
Columbus unfortunately ultimately left the project in September 2021, and Emma Tammi was announced as his replacement in October 2022. The main cast were confirmed in December, while other cast additions were signed in March 2023. Principal photography began in February 2023 in New Orleans and ended in April.
The story of Five Nights at Freddy's contains spoilers!
watch the movie first, then read the review after it:
Mike Schmidt, a mall cop, loses his job after assaulting a negligent father who he confused for being a kidnapper. He is sent to visit career counselor Steve Raglan after being fired in order to find another job, whom after taking into account his long history of being fired, offers him a night guard job at an abandoned family diner known as Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Though initially reluctant to work night hours, he accepts the offer after his custody of his younger sister, Abby, is threatened to be taken away and passed over to his aunt Jane due to concerns of Mike having custody over a child that is perceived as being mentally ill.
On the first night, Mike falls asleep and has a dream where he witnesses the kidnapping and presumed murder of his brother Garrett, whom was taken away by an unknown man in a car. Mike is then met by five unknown children whom allegedly witnessed the kidnapping, and promptly run away from him. On the second night, a police officer known as Vanessa visits the restaurant and introduces herself to Mike, showing him around the restaurant and detailing an event where five children were murdered in the restaurant and their bodies were never found. Mike's dream is repeated on the second night, though after Mike attempts to confront one of the children, he is attacked and wakes up to find himself attacked physically, though his wounds are treated by Vanessa.
After the second night, Jane meets with a group of delinquents and offers them money to break into the restaurant and vandalize it in order to get Mike fired, giving her the custody of Abby. As the break-in occurs, the restaurant's animatronic mascots suddenly become mobile and hostile towards the group, brutally murdering them stuffing their mutilated corpses inside of spare animatronic suits. In this group was Abby's babysitter, which requires Mike to bring Abby to his next shifts and Vanessa shows up each time. The animatronics become active once more, being hostile towards Mike though being friendly towards Abby. The animatronics all form a friendship with Abby, though Vanessa and Mike are hesitant. It is also discovered that the animatronics are possessed by the ghosts of dead children, whom allegedly talk about a "yellow rabbit" consistently.
In-between shifts, Mike explains the disappearance of Garrett when he was young, which became a cold case and that he had been taking sleeping pills every night in order to repeat his dreams and find who kidnaped his brother. After panicking from Abby's increasing relationship with the animatronics on the fourth night, Vanessa warns Mike to not bring Abby to the restaurant again and threatens to shoot him if he does. Mike gets Jane to babysit Abby as he goes back to the restaurant during the day and overdoses on his sleeping pills to go back into his dream. Inside the dream, the five children appear again and tell Mike that he can stay with Garrett forever, in exchange for Abby. During the dream, a partially destroyed version of Freddy Fazbear, "Golden Freddy" appears at Mike's home, murders Jane, and takes Abby back to the restaurant. Mike is attacked several times inside of his dream and wakes up strapped to a machine that attempts to tear off his face. He escapes the machine and flees the restaurant, but is critically injured and is taken by Vanessa.
After Mike details his dream and situation to Vanessa, she reveals that she is the daughter of the serial killer that murdered his brother and the other five children, William Afton. She reveals that the animatronics and souls of the children are under the control of him, and will likely attempt to murder Abby. Mike travels to the restaurant with the necessary equipment to disable the animatronics and save Abby. Abby is taken into a backroom by Chica, who tries to kill her by stuffing her inside of an animatronic suit. Though he disables most of the animatronics and saves Abby, he is attacked by a cupcake animatronic and is separated from Abby, whom is attacked by Foxy but is saved by Vanessa. Both animatronic are defeated, but as the group try to leave the restaurant, William Afton, revealed to have been posing as Steve Raglan and having murdered Garrett, appears wearing a yellow bunny suit, knocks Mike unconscious, and reenables the animatronics.
Knowing that they need to understand the truth, Abby begins drawing a picture of William murdering the children, while Vanessa shoots William and is afterwards stabbed. Abby shows her drawing to the animatronics, causing them to turn on William and attack him. After the attack, the springlock machinery inside of his suit fail, crushing him to death as he is dragged into the back room of the restaurant and locked away. Mike and Abby carry a wounded Vanessa out of the restaurant, though she falls into a coma afterwards and is taken to a hospital. Mike continues to look after Abby and they return to their normal lives.
In a mid-credits scene, Golden Freddy watches as the dying William bleeds out in the corner, closing the door on him soon after. In a post-credits scene, Balloon Boy is shown appearing inside a taxi driver’s car
Did you watched it? good for you 😁
Principal photography was initially set to begin in March 2021. However, due to script issues, filming was delayed. Filming began in New Orleans on February 1, 2023, under the working title Bad Cupcake, with an estimated production budget, before tax incentives, of $25 million, and wrapped on April 3. Lillard began filming his scenes in mid-February. After a while, Matthew and other actors/actresses were finally done with the movie, and ready to be released
The cinematography was filmed by Lyn Moncrief, known for Emma Tammi's "The Wind" and Blumhouse's "The Passenger". One of the things I wanna talk about is how Lyn and the photography team managed to do all of these scenes so well, the close-up scenes, the montage, and everything.
Lyn absolutely nailed this one, to do all the camera work and the scene-maker. I still love that one frame everyone just caught in the middle of the movie, like...
You're not Oppenheimer, brauwh
Emma Tammi doesn't trust CGI but in other editing, she does.
the movie was edited by Andrew Wesman & William Paley (bro is NOT Afton). All of those great details in the entire movie were phenomenal, love the lighting, love how the editors managed to edit/merge all scenes into one confusing movie, I just love everything. (that's all I do, except that one blumhouse movie review)
There has been 1 pretty brutal kill in the middle of the movie, but you have to see the movie first THEN you can get in and read this long ahh review. They literally not kidding about the Strong Violence, that scene is about to be one of my favorite scenes in this one movie.
One more thing that I liked most about editing is... the opening scene. That 4-minute opening is kinda of more of 2010's movie opening scene, with the animation and everything. They've used it since Insidious: The Red Door (which can be seen over here: https://gamejolt.com/p/review-everything-season-2-episode-2-insidious-the-red-door-b8tjaiwv), they used it just to feel nostalgic because that scene is when you know that movie is the last Insidious Movie about Lambert's family (no, that doesn't mean they ended the franchise).
Now let's get back to the point, and yes, they used that kind of style to see more about the missing children, I mean, it looks awesome to show more about the movie plot but NOT too fast. heh, Classic Scott Cawthon.
The whole soundtrack was composed by The Newton Brothers (known for "The Shining 2: Doctor Sleep" and "The Forever Purge") they have absolutely nailed it again since Doctor Sleep, which was a banger and eerie soundtrack.
Since they finally released the soundtrack, The Grandfather's Clock is already one of my favorite soundtracks for Halloween. "Five Nights at Freddy's" (that's the first soundtrack) is the most banger one because of the 80's style at the beginning of the soundtrack and some 8-bit parts, kinda almost sounds like a Tetris theme. They released 24 of them, you can listen to them through Spotify/other music streaming services)
Now, let's talk about the Sound Effects, made by Emily Poulliard (known for "65", "Project Power", and "The Lovebirds"). She's a Utility Sound Technician for this movie. Let me tell you, she nailed the sound effects as well. She did the sound of the animatronics, the electricity, and the sound of the "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza" light sign, even the "nature sounds".
They cooked up frfr
Oh yeah, you might get a surprise at the end credit
Top Cast
Josh Hutcherson - Mike Schmidt
Elizabeth Lail - Vanessa (she's the WHAT!?!?!?)
Piper Rubio - Abby
Matthew Lillard - "Steve Raglan"/William Afton
Cory Williams - Taxi Driver
Matthew "Theory" Patrick - Waiter
In December 2022, Josh Hutcherson and Matthew Lillard joined the cast in undisclosed roles. Five Nights at Freddy's-related YouTuber Dawko later revealed during a livestream that Hutcherson would portray the first game's security guard Mike Schmidt and Lillard would portray the franchise's main villain William Afton.
He also revealed that Mary Stuart Masterson and Piper Rubio joined the cast as Mike's aunt Jane, and Mike's younger sister Abby, respectively. In March 2023, it was reported that Kat Conner Sterling and Elizabeth Lail were cast in the film. Lucas Grant and Jessica Blackmore have undisclosed roles.
After a while, they've finally finished and completed. If you wanna see who and what they are, here it is:
- Coryxkenshin
He was always one of the best because he got scared every time he got jumpscared by something that shouldn't belong in his taxi car (no, this isn't a spoiler, he's already revealed in the full-length trailers).
- Josh Hutcherson
The actor I didn't know he was in Zathura (my childhood movie, watched in the early 2010s) and The Hunger Games movies. Josh is Mike Schmidt for the FNaF movie, which is he finally became the main character in one movie (He's always being second-main character in Zathura and The Hunger Games film series, but he's also the main character for Future Man but that was the TV-Series). He's also one of the best because of his tiredness for the Security Job. Mike Schmidt is the main character in the FNaF franchise Universe but later died in FFPS. Josh's acting was so real, love the way he yelled tho
- Piper Rubio
A special Mike Schmidt sister, she played as Abby Schmidt, according to her last name. This is the actress everyone has been talking about a while ago, rumoring she played as the sibling of Mike Schmidt. her acting is very good, she's also drawing like kids in the early 2000s, which makes Piper Rubio as Abby Schmidt the second main character in the movie.
- Elizabeth Lail
She played as Venessa... ehhhhhh
she's good lmao
- Matthew Lillard
One of my favorite murderer actors right here, he once a murderer actor in a horror slasher movie, Scream 1. He played Stu Macher in there, I would like for you to see Scream 1, he's the best. Now for the FNaF Movie, he played as "Steve Raglan" even though everyone had already learned from The Silver Eyes (try looking for it, you can see he pretended to be another person that doesn't even exist or has been dead named "Dave Miller"). His acting is so calm and so "Afton" for him.
- Joseph Poliquin
this little man played as Carl, he was the part of the trespasser with Max, Jeff, and Hanks. Carl was about to destroy things but he heard a rush in the refrigerator. He opens it, nothing there but when he opens another one, Mr.Cupcake is there, waiting to be found. Carl were ready to destroy the Cupcake but gets interrupted by Chica and gets attacked by Cupcake on Chica's plate with ONE LEAP JUMP
- Christian Stokes
He played as our favorite, Hanks. He was part of the trespasser with Max, Jeff, Carl, and another one I forgot who that is (it was Aunt Jane). Hanks got traumatized after what he saw in the kitchen, trying to run away and hide from it, but little he didn't know, Bonnie was right behind him, waiting for his brutal attack. Christian Stokes is one of the actors of all time.
- Kat Conner Sterling
Kat played as Max, she's the one who doesn't deserve to be left behind to die (also can be seen in the trailer), no reason at all she was forced to do criminal stuff, she's with the other trespasser, she stayed in the car but curious why took them so long to destroy the pizzeria. But again, watch the movie first before reading the review
- Mary Stuart Masterson
This old ahh woman played as Aunt Jane, she was the part of the trespasser but she's not dead in the pizzeria, instead, she passed out in Mike's house. She is the WORST babysitter of all time, I'm sorry, but she is the worst Karen I've ever witnessed in the FNaF movie. Good thing she fall asleep for eternity
- Michael P Sullivan
that guy played as this random dude "Doug"
already the best character in the entire movie lol
Ooooohhhh, what the hell is this? new section??
Yes, it basically is. This section is the one I've ALWAYS wanna talk about is The Design of the movie set and characters. How they build it up, how they make the design of the animatronics, and more!
Now let's talk about the set first, how they do it, how they make it? Well, that's one easy answer (two answers, actually). They make the outside set to make some scenes like a "Freddy's Fazbear Pizza" sign close-up scene, a Shaggy guy reveals, and Vanessa's first appearances. They make the actual restaurant INSIDE the set for months, then merge the scenes from the inside set and outside set into one scene, which is cool.
One of my favorite things about the set is how many details and how dirty the pizzeria is. To the team who worked on this stuff, wowwie wow, that is incredible.
Now let's talk about the characters/mascot design, made by Jim Henson's Company (Jim Henson's - Creature Shop), which is crazy because Jim Henson's Company made so many puppets for many movies such as:
Original TMNT movies (1 and 2)
Return to OZ
The Muppets
Sesame Street
The Jungle Book (remake)
Pinocchio ("Guillermo del Toro's" version)
much more
So, how they made it? well, way back in August 2022, after the FNaF 8-year anniversary, Jason Blum posted the pre-production about "working with Jim Henson's Creature Shop". Everyone was freaking out about the FIRST-EVER BTS teaser for FNaF Movie.
It was this, way back on August 9, 2022:
After making the puppet, the team made the 3 costumes for the characters' mascots, it took them months to make because Foxy was the one who was hard to make, so they made the ACTUAL Foxy in puppet animatronic, so they could control one body part to another.
Before finishing the costumes, they also make the torture device Saw-style with an escape spot, which is screwing off the screws to be free. They made it look like a Saw trap perfectly, with many saw blades all around the device. Looks cool to see the torture devices before the death of the security guard.
Alright, let's get back to the point
They also had to make the costumes to look like an actual animatronics, so they used the sparkle effect and the mouth movement. It is awesome to see how they make it too much accurate to the game. Scott was right about Bonnie's colors, in the movie poster, you see Bonnie in a purple fog lighting to make Bonnie look purple, but if you see him in the movie, he's blue. He talked about it and being asked so many times, he was right, Bonnie was SUPPOSED to be blue, which can be seen here:
Let's get back to the point, months later, they finally finished up the animatronics costumes and are ready to be acted by the actors and actresses (for Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy). Some YouTubers visited the set and got hugs for the animatronic, they said Bonnie was an aggressive one, well, explain this;
I love him so much, such a cutie patootie and silly.
Oh, sorry. Anyway, the animatronics actors are finally done with the acting and ready to be released in the wild (Theaters & streaming on Peacock) (I love Bnoy)
Did I forget to mention there is one easter egg in this movie involved with something old and hoax, you have to watch it, twice or more, you'll see it
Do you know how long I've been waiting for this movie to come out? longer than you think. So many critics have been approved, and many audiences have been approved, is it bad? Is it good? or is it decent? find out after I finish recapping all sections from one to another.
The plot is almost confusing, almost the entire plot is more like The Silver Eyes, The Cinematography is fine, love the camera shot, the editing is perfect, the lighting is too good, The Newton Brothers nailed the soundtrack, Emily Poulliard nailed the sound effects, the acting is... I'll give it 7.8/10, the design of the set? perfection, the design of the character's mascot? also perfection.
FINALLY, I give this masterpiece:
8.9/10. "Worth 8.6 years of waiting, recommended watching it"
If you wanna watch the movie yourself or with your friends/family, you can watch it now in Theaters and Streaming on Peacock
(Peacock is only available in the US, UK, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy)
Before we get through here, let's see the box office for the FNaF movie. So, for the Thursday Night Previews, the movie itself grossed $10.3 million, making it the biggest ever for a film with a simultaneous streaming release. The actual opening release, the film had grossed $39.5 million, didn't meet expectations but they said the movie earned the biggest domestic opening day ever for a video game movie with that much money. Now, let's get through the actual critic reviews.
Oh boy, every time I look through the critic's reviews, it's just getting worse and worse, like what is this:
According to IMDb:
a decent 5.7/10 on IMDb rating
According to Rotten Tomatoes:
25% on Tomatometer
89% on Audience scoreSeems like FNaF fans defending this movie, huh?
According to Metascore:
33 on Metascore
8.2 on User scoresame thing as Rotten tomatoes
According to IGN:
4/10 on IGN score
with a quote:
"This big-screen take on the indie-horror sensation has too much plot and not enough of the game's primal security-cam thrills"Wtf did you expect, to see Mike doing FNaF 1 gameplay for 6 hours straight? why IGN has so many and picked dumb reviewer
According to CinemaScore:
A- on GradeScore (eh, that's fine, no need to do trash talk on this)
CONCLUSION
If you're reading this review, let me ask you some questions, did you watched the movie? if you did, good, because I don't want YOU to get spoiled.
And that's all for today's SPECIAL REVIEW episode, I've been waiting for this for so long, and it finally came.
Thank you so much for reading this review episode, before I finally wrap up the review episode, can I show you something?
THIS is the one I always wanted to show you and no, not gonna delay this time, after I watched the movie, I finally broke up with my slacking off. And finally working on this game again.
