RIBBIT - What did Chapter 2 affect?

It is the year 2021. We are living in a post-Chapter 2 world. Flowers seem to bloom a little brighter these days. Drivers have stopped yelling and honking the horn at the other subjectively worse drivers. Frogs have developed vocal cords.

Remember that Deltarune mod I was making? Ribbit? Yeah, man, I haven't heard that name in... 5 days. Some would say that the reason I played Chapter 2 was for fun. Nobody at all would say I did it for the research, and to see how would this major addition to the Deltarune series affect the mod. But I am still going to explain what's been affected.

And, the short version is... not all that much, actually! The mod will attempt to remain on track for December, with the main thing that was affected being some of the sprites. As for the more detailed explanation...

The biggest concern by far was that the mod is being developed on the old 2018 version of Deltarune, and will require you to own a copy of that version in order to play Ribbit. However, now that Chapter 2 is out, the old version of Chapter 1 is not publicly accessible anymore... porting Ribbit to the new version of Deltarune would be significantly difficult as well, since the new version runs on Game Maker 2.3. The current Undertale modding tools are not equipped to handle that particular engine, and as such, modding the old 2018 version of Deltarune is still the most convenient option.

Thankfully, there's still an easy way to get the old version of Deltarune, as the website technically still has it, you just need to have the URL. I will provide one now in case you don't have this version for one reason or another.

So that's the one major hurdle with this mod cleared up. As for the content found within the mod itself...

Bearing in mind that Ribbit was always about trying to tell its own story without necessarily sticking to the Undertale/Deltarune lore, the story will not undergo any changes. With the exception of the writing adjustments that will be done near the end of development + adjustments based on any feedback my playtesters will give me.

But these adjustments were always planned to be done, whether or not Chapter 2 came out this year, simply because some of the lines in this mod were written, like, 3 years ago. I don't wanna pretentiously say I've „improved as a writer”, but I've certainly changed.

I will not be carrying over chapter 2's improvements or gameplay mechanics into Ribbit. Since the mod is being developed on the chapter 1-only version of the game, I feel it'd be wrong to start taking code from the other chapter and dropping it into a version of the game that's not supposed to have it. Just a personal thing. Possibly a legal thing as well.

That being said though, there is actually one coincidental gameplay feature in Ribbit that Deltarune Chapter 2 turned out to use as well, and, um, well... yeah! Just please know it was a coincidence.

I will not be making a Ribbit Chapter 2. Technically speaking, there was never even a Ribbit Chapter 1. Ribbit is gonna be a story with a beginning, middle, and a conclusive end, the type of end where it wouldn't make sense to make a direct sequel to it. Am I saying that I'll never make a chapter 2 mod, though? Not sure.

It kind of depends if the modding tools improve well enough that modding Chapter 2 will become more convenient. And I would certainly like to make smaller jokey videos of me modding the game. As for like, another really big mod, well, that kind of depends on whether I've decided to make an original game by that point or not... who knows? I can't just make Undertale content forever, y'know?

I think in terms of what actually WAS affected though, was Noelle. Now that we've got some Dark World sprites for her, good a time as any to utilize them for the mod as well, so she's not just in her school outfit all the time in-between both worlds. The new sprites for Kris and Susie might also see some use, though not too much, since there's only a few remaining cutscenes left to program. And there's probably no need to start redoing all of them just to fit the new sprites in. Have you even seen what I did to the already existing sprites for these characters? It's a miracle nobody stopped me yet.

I think I've just ran out of talking juice all of a sudden. Been taking too long to write this next paragraph. But, I've explained everything I think I needed to, so, cool! Starting from tomorrow, development on the final boss is resuming. I'll be honest with you... programming attacks sucks. But, only 10 left, right? Let us all hope it'll be worth it in the end.
