No, I'm not really doing this on purpose, but let's get into a bit of the why I haven't posted this on the 10th, or at least on the 14th OR the 7th because it's a Sunday, as I SHOULD be, it's more or less I couldn't share much of what I was working on and also I'm juggling too much on my hands. There wasn't much of anything I could share and therefore didn't plan on sharing on the project's progress. But this changes now.
Okay, so I thought it would be a GREAT idea to make another game project based on JA, except this time, base it on JABE, because if there was one project that happens to be like an addition for JAR, and also like JAR since it gives a new spin on the story, then why not give something like that for JABE? ...Now that I think about it, it's like the logic behind July and August having the same amount of days, but I digress.
And no, I'm not changing the name of JABE to something like "Jonathan's Adventure: Magician Edition" because one, that's dumb, and two, I'm keeping it for consistency, but that's not important and let's jump on the details on the new project.
The new project, again, like the cat RPG, is meant to have different things from the mainline games. For one, this involves the story and this means breaking the golden rule of "make the story make sense regardless of what route Jonathan goes", which I did it. Three times, but it's more or less for sequels and also understanding how Jonathan is written, especially for how the games are designed. The similarity to the cat RPG is boiled down to "I'm just trying to do different things." While it takes elements from JABE story-wise, JABE isn't going to be a mandatory experience since it's not finished and you don't really need to, since it's more of a self-contained experience. Granted, it doesn't solve questions if you were to play THIS before JABE came out, but whatever.
Gameplay-wise, I know this may or may not be a turn-off, but I've thought of making this project more or less an ATB game and that's more or less because Mother: Cognitive Dissonance is sorta the main influence. Essentially, for this game, I wanted to make it like a playable dream that's an RPG, and because the theme is dreams, this means being able to throw shit onto the wall. Since JA never has a sole ATB RPG game at all (No, just because it's on RPG Maker 2003 doesn't mean it's that.), I thought why not actually make it an ATB game? Plus, it'll allow some stuff that I haven't thought of putting in any of the mainline JA games.
While I can't really say much about the game, I will say that artstyle wise, it's going to be diverse but my God is a hard road to travel to. Okay, so while I love the idea of making seperate thumbnails depending on WHERE you're playing the game at, trying to do this mixed-media approach to the characters, and I mean it especially for the portraits, it gets REALLY frustrating and it mainly came to ones where a more "traditional" style is used, and I say that because it's more or like using the paint brushes instead of the standard normal pen brush I use for my art. This is because of opacity and my fucking God does Krita hide those issues more than GIMP. I don't know if there's a fix for this, but I groan everytime I have to go back to Krita to paint more at certain points because OOPS, I missed certain spots and they look wrong, so back to the drawing board.
I could just use a separate layer in GIMP to fix those issues, but they're not ideal for more complex art and none of my paint artstyles are that simple, plus they're not built to be used on Krita and GIMP, but at the end of the day, it is what it is and it's not going to stop me from enjoying the process. It's honestly fun because I can just include references tailored to each site, so it makes sense if you know them. It's like "de Blob 2" where Blob changes color depending on the platform you're playing on, though it's inconsistent since only Wii (And DS) uses blue, but the Xbox 360, Windows, only the digital version for PS3, and PS4 uses green, while the PS3 physical release and Switch uses red. Understandable for the Wii because it was blue, and red for Switch, because Nintendo marketing, but why the Xbox One gets red, while the PS4 gets green and not red because of the PS3?
Though the site differences don't stop there visually, you can still get them regardless of what version you're playing, but they're mainly just for aesthetics. I mean, it would be cool if they affected the battle system window but they don't and I don't think there's any way to do so in both the Maniacs patch and EasyRPG. Nevertheless, I hope the joy I get when I put work into the project bleeds onto the experience. Though Pokemon Legends Z-A is gonna come out, so can't wait to get the game on. In October. Yeah.
