Finally, some actual content! In GIF form!
Now, left is Jane/Parappa64's sprites from a JAC build, and here's my sprites on the right.
If I had to expand on what I said from last week, when I mean consistency, I meant like the artwork for the game AND the sprites. So essentially, all of the characters are drawn mostly on the basis of the game's artwork, so Jonathan, Imasu, and Kabi don't share the same height as each other, which means Imasu is the tallest member and now a three way tie of the three that isn't a Rotom. Also, no more block-ish shapes from Jonathan. And the hardest to draw was, again, Kabi. The thing is that unlike the rest, she has an actual tail. So it had to be animated, because if I didn't animate Jonathan's ears, then I wouldn't have to animate the tail, and that's not something you can see easily since most of the frames, the tail is BELOW the layer of her body. Not to mention the shading, because try to imagine Kabi in 3D with a bit of a sharp cel shading, it's not going to be easy to draw, which also applies to Sasara's hair, but I disgress.
I've been thinking about rebuilding the whole start of the game. Perhaps improve the coding if it's flawed and draw more sprites? Because I think the scene of Nerd entering into Sasara's home needs to be rewritten, because it felt like it was poorly built and had to rely on hiding things by the camera, instead of having the code do its job of hiding things. Yes, you're going to see me rebuild or redraw images because sometimes it needs to be GOOD. A lot better than the demo, which was an honest to god shit show that was upheld by duct tape. And also fix the writing issues just in case, because THIS IS an RPG. The story, along with the gameplay, IS the backbone, it can't be half-assed, in which the end result is basically Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, the 2020 film's writing. You just can't convince people to play a game if both the plot AND gameplay SUCKS, no matter how much you dump your skills on the graphics or sound design, because it's a video game. They're not here for the art and they're not here to play a "video game" that's basically 1 long ass cut scene. They're HERE to play a game, there's no point of making a controller be some expensive DVD player remote because if it is, then you shouldn't be making video games. You should be making a film. Making video games BE films is straight up stupid in a medium ABOUT interactivity, which films just can't, because a viewer doesn't change the course of the narrative within it.
So anyway, hope I'll see you by the next week, which is the last devlog for March. See ya.
