Sonic: Scrambled Eggs

So much has been going on the past few years let alone the past few months!

Between cancellations, grand reopenings, let-downs and hype... Scrambled Eggs' (now Reality Check) future has always been uncertain for everyone.

Want some news?

I was afraid the scope of the game was too big for GameMaker to suit my needs. Around February I started seriously looking into Godot and experimenting around.

  • With this, in early March, I was able to recreate a few shaders of the Lantern Engine (SA1 DC's lighting engine) quite literally 1:1. Down to the math and way of applying gradient palettes.,

  • Working with a genuine 3D engine felt liberating, and it made learning shader creation much easier.,

However, looking back at all I have made in GM and my years of experience with it, it felt almost heartbreaking to move on from it. Almost as if I was just giving up, going an easier route. And truth is, Easy™️ just isn't my style.

  • I decided to try and tackle my own 3D framework directly in GM. I shall talk about it in great detail when the next devlog eventually hits the channel after a few years of absence. I'm still willing to show a short clip, though!,

  • This 3D framework proved itself tedious, and the performances were horrendous (but such is the way of working with GameMaker, it requires a lot of cheap yet clever methods to get it working right.),

  • I took a break from Sonic, because my great friend and incredible YouTuber/Streamer Jetter06 asked for help on three StarFox related projects. All made in GameMaker, it somehow felt even more liberating than working in Godot. You guys will definitely hear about these very very soon. We're extremely proud of how it's all turning out!!,

  • Another reason for this hiatus is that for the past month I have gotten a seasonal job! It's taking a LOT of hours out of my day (10 hours at a minimum, without counting traveling) and thus makes it much harder to dedicate time to game dev... but given the time I'm writing this -3am- it might seem clear I don't need too much sleep. ,

With that said; I decided to move on from Godot back to GameMaker and port all the work I had made there!

  • Reality Check's source code went through a huge optimization process, from a custom renderer to cutting down on a lot of unrequired assets and scripts that still were eating a lot of resources.,

  • The game went from running on an average of 300-400fps to currently running on an average of 800fps, being able to peak as high as 1100+ fps on my machine.,

  • Per usual, the plot is always being refined more and more, with the goal behind it feeling clearer and clearer as I talk with multiple members and draft stuff in a little sketchbook.,

  • The movesets of most playable characters are now conceptualized! All they require is to be implemented and animated!!

Farewell, Scrambled Eggs.

First, the name change.

Now, the concept art.

As one would say : "Welcome to Soleanna City".

Why hello there,

First update post of 2021!

The demo is late, as always. Mainly because the more stuff I fix, the more other stuff breaks. It wouldn't be fun otherwise!

We also kept going back and forth with the art direction, but we are finally settled!

After being announced a month ago, I finally started to plan out and work on these weekly devlogs!

Here is a super short "beta" preview of the first episode coming tomorrow. While it'll be Monday, the rest will come every Sunday.

And yes it's my voice. 😶

Long time no see, huh?!

Peep the Twitter to check what's happening behind the scenes:

- Long time no see! Missed us, much? -

Hey you: you know we're back, right?!

Peanut Butter Jelly Time?

No idea, however I finally finished and imported the new title screen!

A new devbuild of the fabled Century Egg update is here: Please, do not expect too much out of it as the game misses 96% of the gimmicks as of yet.

Still, you might wanna check it out!!

Important announcement.
