Fragile Hearts - An Undertale Fan Game

So, the actual update now. (Part 2, the actual new and changed stuff to the game.)

So with the more serious stuff out of the way, let's get onto the actual planned changes for stuff regarding the story, gameplay, and all the other good stuff.

The Sprites!

You all know how much I love changing the sprites to an unhealthy degree. So might as well get this out of the way first. Since it will be by far the one with the most amount of visual representation.

protagnewsprites.png

Firstly, we have our all important PROTAGonist! Originally, she was more so meant to be similar to Frisk, but is now a bit more of a character. In addition, with the battle system taking more of an inspiration from Deltarune, her costumes will now carry over into battle. (There will likely be less than the demos when I eventually get the game done on release fyi)

As you can tell, the sprites are a fair bit bigger. That's because the tilesets have seen an increase in size as well as just improvement in spriting ability. While this is an Undertale fan game, it is absolutely still going to be it's own thing.

(Note, her sprites are furthest along in development and being used both for her and for testing purposes)

Next is Jasper! As you can see, he still looks as smug as ever. But he looks much less Sans-esque. Instead of his hoodie being always open like Sans's, it's now closed and much bigger on him. A few other changes have been made to him to further separate his character from being a Sans expy.

kira_new_sprites.png

Out of all the characters, I think Kira and another character a bit further down got the biggest glow up so far and I'm pretty proud of how it turned out.

siren_new_sprites.png

Siren's glowup mainly had to do with adjusting their class archetype to more closely match what they actually were personality wise. Since they had long outgrown their "ninja" idea.

jessienewsprites.png

Jessie's glow up isn't as extreme as some of the others, but she did to get some touch ups. And also got turned into a calico in the process.

nauka_new_sprites.png

Nauka got a complete redesign. The main reason being Siren already was a wolf, so we didn't really need a second canine in the group. So we got frog instead. Much like Jessie, the new Frog design was helped out by my good friend ArtisticVulpes. Though the original draft was closer to the scientist idea before I changed him and his design to be a detective.

jackson_new_sprites.png

Lastly a character I didn't end up showing much about last time, Jackson here originally was intended to be a Genocide exclusive party member. That plan has since been put through the paper shredder 100 times over at this point. His new role is far more interesting. And in fact, both He and Jessie no longer require any violence to join your party. Any ideas you get from his old design? Throw them in the trash! The only thing left from his old design is the pointed tail, and general color scheme.

The Story!

Storywise, the game is going to play out similarly to how I intended it to originally. The main bunny will be traveling through the underground on a quest to uncover who she is, who the mysterious voice is talking to her when she sleeps, and why these weird monsters are trying to seize control over her soul.

However, there will also be a lot of changes. For example...

The game will now be split off into an Act system, with each act containing different aspects of the story.

Act 1 will contain a lot of the character building be relatively linear. It will take you though what was intended to be the "fake" pacifist ending of the original Fragile Hearts if you were unable to reach certain criteria by the end of the story. Until you reach the end of Act 1, you won't be able to RESET through traditional means due to story reasons. But you can still do save scummy stuff to get alternate dialogue in places.

Act 2 will play out closer to how I originally intended Fragile Hearts to play out, though most of the endings will likely be fairly unfulfilling due to the rabbit's goal of hunting down a way to recover her memories. Due to story events, you'll be a bit more open in what you're able to do during this Act of the game, and multiple rooms will be skipped for pacing reasons.

And lastly, Act 3 will contain the rest of the end game stuff I had planned out for Fragile Hearts that you never got to see. I'm not at liberty to say what this will be, but I hope it will be worth the wait.

The... gameplay?

I mean... it's still an Undertale/Deltarune fan game. If I'm able to finally get away with making it in GMS2 it will be the Undertale/Deltarune battle system.

...You can do platforming again?

Okay in all seriousness, in preparation for the next game, I'm planning on giving party members actions they can use to help solve puzzles for Act 1 & 3. The only one that will remain available at all times is the rabbit's jumping one, and is the only one set in stone sooo yeah.

And once again. Thank you everyone for putting up with me for all these years.

See anything interesting about this picture? I got reflections working, but there's something else.... If you were thinking "Co-op..." Then congrats! You got that one right. Though it was pretty hard to notice.
