State and Future of SCP Breakdown.


Hey everyone, Its been roughly 9 months since the last post but wanted to update everyone on the situation involving SCP Breakdown.Long story short, the current SCP Breakdown is cancelled, however it might be re imagined as a game Engine or get remade much later down the line.

When The SCP Breakdown page was initially created on Gamejolt back in 2019, We had initially a lot of times on our hands and thought we could create an SCP game in a decent amount of time that people could enjoy. However, as time moved on, our lives got busier and we were running out of free time to work on this, which lead to less motivation to work on this. This resulted in us trying out different projects which we had motivation for, and experimenting to see what was fun and what wasn't, and putting SCP Breakdown as a little side project we would work on from time to time. This resulted in all of our attention going into other projects and not this, putting this game in development hell with no real communication from us to you besides comments.

We experimented with a few other project ideas, such as a survival sandbox game like in the previous post, and 2 other unique horror games, which we had full control over the creativity and design, leading to a funner experience creating them, which lead to more motivation. One flaw with working on fan games is that it can potentially lead to less creative freedom as you are stuck with working within the rules of that universe, which isn't a bad thing by any means and some people prefer fan games over unique projects, but we wanted to experiment and create more unique projects. This is why in one of the earlier posts, I asked if you would all prefer the style of map generation like SCP Containment Breach , or a more stage based, or rogue-like styled game. We also lacked experience, which lead to a lot of problems when developing the game, namely map generation, which lead to a foundation of a game that was hard to work from.

There is still hope for SCP Breakdown though, as while the current game is most likely not coming back, the concepts and programming could potentially be re-used as a basis for a SCP Breakdown Engine, or the game could be brought back, probably not based in the SCP universe, but the same top down, pixel esc style.

As for our other projects, The other 2 horror games are currently being developed by different members of the team, the original programmer is focused on creating his own
PS1-Styled nautical horror game, which has dev-logs in the Tidalworks discord. I'm focusing on creating a 5 Player asymmetrical horror game which will be released on steam hopefully sometime later this year, named "Chump Co". A Gamejolt page for Chump Co is now made and can be viewed, which in time, possibly teasers and game play will be shown on the page, as well as the usual updates, polls and forms to keep fans of the project involved.

So that is basically everything involving SCP Breakdown, I am more than happy to answer any questions involving SCP breakdowns development history, what we had planned and so on, as well as any questions about Chump Co. Hopefully, you can all understand why this happened.

Next up

The inventory has been implemented and works! It needs a little refinement and then it should be ready. As of now the game is around 48% complete, and could come out sooner if we do not implement the ending.

anyway, while i wait for more votes on the polls, here is a picture of scp breakdown in a earlier build, the current version doesn't have a build so this is gonna have to do.

working on map generation,we also started to use the new art and made them "flat".

Working on map generation a bit more, somehow all of the rooms are turning out as bathrooms. This is a pretty weird bug. Also sorry for the low quality.

This will probably be the post where you can check how close the game is to completion. Currently, the game is about 80% complete.

Alright, so basically what happened is that the current version got yeeted and is gone, i got a build from very early in development. This means that imma probably allow you to download the very early build and remake the game, alot of polls will be made.

Updated the scientists, player and security, old is on the left and new is on the right.

I decided to make a website for a small 2.5D scp game. This will probably be where i post a lot of updates about the game, as of this post on 23/03/2019, the game is around 5% done. I will continue to post updates.

We have essentially implemented SCP 173. His AI is complete and his sprite is implemented, the box in the picture is the AI itself. We have now begun to work on SCP 106. AS of now, the game is around 30% done. I will continue to post updates.

Map generation is still being worked on at a much faster rate, if you can could you please leave a comment on your opinion of this style of map generation, it would be very helpful! (keep in mind it is a work in progress)
