Super UNDERTOAD Land - (rough) Release Plan


Hey!

Since this page has a few followers now, I wanna go over my plan for releasing the game and briefly talk about a few issues I might stumble upon during development.

Schedule

While I don't know if I'm going to meet these deadlines, I figured it couldn't hurt to make them anyways. After all, it'll be good having some motivation to constantly work on the game, especially with my already busy life and wanting to make sure I still post something on my account every day or two.

So here's the schedule I hope to follow:

  • Demo 1 - "Ye Ol' Underground"

    • Planned finishing date: 23rd Dec, 2025

    • Planned release date: 25th Dec, 2025

    • Taking a break until: 2nd Jan, 2026

      • This demo is planned to contain the first area in the game, Ye Ol' Underground

  • Demo 2 - "Ghiaccio"

    • Planned finishing date: 27th Feb, 2026

    • Planned release date: 1st Mar, 2026

    • Taking a break until: 3rd Mar, 2026

      • This demo is planned to add the second area in the game Ghiaccio, as well as polishing any issues present in the first demo

  • Demo 3 - "Umido"

    • Planned finishing date: 18th May, 2026

    • Planned release date: 20th May, 2026

    • Taking a break until: July 1st, 2026 (longer due to exams)

      • This demo is planned to add the third area in the game Ghiaccio, as well as polishing any issues present in the previous demo

  • Demo 4 - "Luogo Caldo"

    • Planned finishing date: 10th Sep, 2026

    • Planned release date: 15th Sep, 2026

    • Taking a break until: 20th Sep, 2026

      • This demo is planned to add the fourth area, Luago Caldo, along with adding the transitional sub-area to the fifth area in the game, New Underground, While also polishing any issues present in the previous demo

  • Full Release

    • Planned finishing date: 23rd Dec, 2026

    • Planned release date: 25th Dec, 2026

      • This build plans to release the full game with 2 browser builds and a Game Boy ROM, all containing all 5 areas

      • The first web build will have colour like all of the builds before

      • The second web build will be completely green, lacking a colour mode for a more authentic Game Boy experience

      • All of the Demo builds will be reuploaded on the same day for archival purposes

  • Patches

    • Starting the 1st of February until the 1st of April, I will put out a monthly patch for any bugs people encounter in the game

  • Announcement

    • Apr 1st, 2026

And then, this game will probably remain untouched for the foreseeable future


Possible issues:

  • Getting DMCA'd:

    The red N that isn't a streaming service has made it VERY obvious that they do not like fan-made products of any kind. I'm even restraining myself from naming anything from the series this AU is based on so there's a lower chance it'll get found by them.

    However, if this of all fan projects does get the famous DMCA strike, I'll completely remove everything related to the plumber's world and change this to be a Sonic fan project out of pure spite (everything should be mostly the same mechanically, though)

    But taking into account that the official UNDERTOAD and other plumber inspired AU's haven't been touched by them (yet) as well as them not claiming popular fan projects in recent times such as Super Mariomon, this isn't a big concern I have. Just thought I'd address it in case anyone was wondering what would happen

  • The Game Boy's limit:

    With the Game Boy being a weak ol' chap compared to most game consoles today, I may have to make this a Game Boy Color exclusive game and/or cut content along the way

  • Life & Motivation:

    My motivation to make stuff comes in and out like the tide, so most of the time I will be on and off of the project. As well as that while I develop the project I also have school and (hopefully) college after the summer to deal with as well, so I won't be able to make this game as fast as I'd like to


A few extra notes:

  • This release plan is not final, just a guideline. I don't have a lot of experience in GB Studio at the moment, so I may go back and polish stuff from older releases, and I might also get faster with development as I become more acquainted with the engine (although I will still stick to the release date, unless I get months ahead of schedule).

  • There won't be too many dev logs due to me not wanting to spoil anything in the game, maybe only one or two between releases.

  • There will be an announcement 7 days before and on the day of each release, or alternatively a post if I have to delay a release or two/

  • No demo builds will get patches/bug fixes unless said bug makes the game unplayable.


That's all I wanted to say in this post. Just wanted to let y'all know that just because this page won't be updated a lot doesn't mean I'm not working on it.

I'll put out a dev log post once I'm about halfway done with Ye Ol' Underground (Area 1)

I've been trying to improve my pixel art the last few days to add more detail, so I decided to expand on yesterday's 10th Anniversary Post and made Sans & Chara!

Also the first level is completely made besides spriting it (it's just coloured blocks rn), so I'll make a dev log once I have a the top-down section immediately after it done (I'll show footage in the dev log too)

I stopped doing it since it was time consuming, but I thought I'd share it since I was recently reminded of it.
