Here was a screenshot of the 1993 "Tails in Sonic The Hedgehog", which was only exclusive in portions of North America (Canada, and Mexico) and Japan (Tokyo).

This old, and unreleased Sonic game had Coins instead of rings. SEGA says that they were making Sonic 1 possible on the N64, but no one has found a copy of it yet. Only screenshots remain of the game sadly.
