While still in the making, the groundwork is already placed along with most of the mechanics.
Since you’ll mostly be going solo, I had a hard time making the battle system fun, so I had to turn to a more fast paced solution. Implemented a combo system to make it more interactive and fast, so the player won’t just watch things happen.
But this mechanic tended to unbalance everything else. Basic attack essentially became redundant, and the way I tried to balance that was making the basic attack generate a huge amount of TP, the resource you use to fuel your combo.
That way it would be useful in situations where you’re stuck with no TP.
Other than that, guard was also redundant since you could just do a combo to stun your enemy, that’s why stun, sleep and all Crowd Control is only usable once per battle. As for guard, it reflects everything. Every single spell in the game. Once used, it’s unusable until the player attacks with any… attack.
Playing the assassins, you have two styles of combat. Gun and Dagger.
Dagger is balanced to completely annihilate single target enemies and debuff them to bleed. Simple as that.
The gun is for dealing with multiple enemies. The way I’ve done this without making the gun spam an unimaginable amount of AOE attacks is by adding a burst bullet mechanic. Certain skills shoot bursting bullets and make enemies unstable, if hit again while unstable, End Turn Explosion will be triggered at… the end of the turn :D that effect deals damage to all enemies. The more unstable at the end of the turn, the more damage it does.
Additionally, if and enemy was bleeding prior to exploding, they’ll be stunned. This can be used multiple times during a battle. This way the two styles synchronize without them mixing.
The last category of skills is self buffs. After going through all of a style’s combos, the combo branches into the buff category, making you be able to choose to buff at the end of the turn, which might be risky, considering 2 out of the 3 buffs make you take double damage, but they’re well worth it. Self buffs are the only skills that use energy, but they use a significant amount, so reserving them for the ideal situation is a better idea.
Now here’s a gif of a shade being bullied in test battle :D
