Working on Project: Blue has been quite a learning experience for everybody on the team. Thankfully we can say that we have managed to figure out a proper production pipe line for the game to be able to build new assets for it.
Over the last year and a half we have been stumbling thorough the dark developing new mechanics and making new art assets, trying to figure out what works and what does not. All of this learning can be seen with how much Project: Blue has changed in that time.
Project: Blue, as originally intended, was supposed to have multiple levels and a level select stage so that the player could tackle the levels in any order that they wanted. Thanks to all of the hard work we put in at the beginning of the development we are now able to finish additional levels in a fraction of the time that it took us to complete the first level.
In fact, working on additional levels has become easy enough that I am proud to report that the second level of Project: Blue is already done. The first level was in-visioned as a jungle that is in the process of being clear cut, and our second level has been in-visioned as a convoy of cargo ships sailing through a polluted ocean.
But just building a level that plays in a similar manner to the first would be boring, so we have actually put in a considerable amount of work to make sure that the second level plays differently than the first.
Unlike the jungle level, which is one linear stage with different sections for the canopy and floor, the cargo ships have 2 layers running simultaneously. The player is able to run along the decks of the ships, or below deck and transition between the two, but beware because below the decks of the ships are increased dangers that are not present on the tops of the ships.
We have also built a boss fight that plays completely differently than the boss fight from the first level. All of this work has been done inside of the last 2 months, a significant reduction in production time from all of the work completed up to this point.
We are now excited to begin work on a third level for Project: Blue and hope to have it in the hands of players soon.
