You can craft a stone-tipped wood pickaxe

You can then combine a stone-tipped wood pickaxe with a stone block to get a stone pickaxe.

A stone-tipped wood pickaxe will be able to mine blocks that a stone pickaxe can mine, but it will have less durability than a stone pickaxe.

This is how the jury rigging feature works, and it can be done using a regular crafting table.
