Time to share something cool I’ve been working on!
Part 2 of the major overhaul in the project means committing more to “16-bit” aesthetic. The guitar-heavy music featured in the trailer was a test of my original intention for the music. I initially wanted to make something like Sonic ATS/BTS’ music because that’s where I perceived the standard to be.
But, as I began to lean more and more into the “16-bit” part of the “Sonic Triple Trouble 16-bit,” I decided to go a route less traveled.
The game’s soundtrack will now sound like authentic Genesis-styled FM music. I’ve been studying the soundtracks of Genesis games, using tools to dissect the songs instrument by instrument, and look at debug information of the Genesis’s Yahama YM2612 soundchip. I’m starting to get the hang of it!
I am quite happy with this direction. Outside of rom hacks, very few fangames (if any) go for authenticity when it comes to the music. I’m working fairly strictly within the limitations of the Genesis’ sound capabilities, in an effort to be reasonably authentic. I’ve compiled a sample of some of the work I’ve created so far, as a sneak peek. Hope you like it!
