The more and more I develop this remake, the more and more I respect the Genesis aesthetic. While the look and sound of the Sega Genesis games come out necessity from limitations, those 90’s artists/musicians were able to create very tasteful works.
I’ve done a lot of research on the color limitations of the original Genesis. I’ve started applying those colors to the art of game. It’s starting to look more like a Genesis game! Which also makes it feels more like a Genesis game. Fun fact: the Genesis Sonic games never have more 61 colors on screen. It’s incredible what they were able to do with so little! #TheMoreYouKnow
For those that are curious, I hope to release some handy guides and documentation describing what I’ve learned about the Genesis Sonic’ aesthetic (both sound and graphics) and design. Hopefully, it will help those of you that want to make Sega Genesis inspired games as well!
See you at SAGE,
Noah
