If anyone wants the surprise spoiled, here are some vague notes on what specifically has changed:
Pinkarrion's spawn rate has been set to normal.
Admittedly, now he feels too easy... Hmm...
Mr. Plate Shard can be used on a specific set of objects that you likely are familiar with if you've played already.
Essentially, Ekzorzitz and Mr. Shard OTP.
A special surprise that you're guaranteed to encounter!
Meow!
Improved graphics!
By that, I mean some default assets have been replaced to fit with the rest of the game's "great art."
Loads of new sounds!
(I cannot tell a lie. Almost all of these new sounds were recorded about a year ago, but we all like to hide stuff, don't we?)
Certain bugs and grievances have been patched out.

All of these changes only apply to the mansion as it is. New rooms and new areas will all be mass added in the dreaded version 2.0!
