This is Only the Beginning - Repost

This article has been reposted to my GameJolt profile’s blog from my real blog, Torben’s Game Dev Log.

Hello everyone and welcome to my game development journey blog. This blog is designed to be kind of a hub for any new information I come across, keep me motivated to keep working at games, and especially for me to look back on later for a good laugh.

The blog may not be updated super frequently, unless it gets popular which I am doubtful of. But each update should be of interest to some of you. If you have any tips on what I am doing, please do comment. I am still learning so something old to you may be completely new under the sun for me.

A little about myself… I am 17 years old currently, going on 18 this early September (whoo!). I have been learning C++ for just over a year now, I started in May of 2012. I know SDL (and basic assembly), though am eager to move on to OpenGL and getting into 3D games. I am not to interested in using libraries such as Ogre3D or anything of the sort, I want to stick to APIs like SDL, OpenGl, etc.

I also should mention that for the past year I’ve been learning programming, it has almost all been done with a good friend of mine I talk to on Skype near daily, over-all learning together has made the process twice as fast and being able to bounce questions off someone and get some input on a method is really good for learning (especially when you are trying to learn programming without taking a course). Overall we are both self-taught and still have much to learn.

Currently I am learning how to do fixed timesteps in games, the problem I am hving is simply understanding how to do collision and interpolation now. I’ve figured (with the help of articles and a few chats) out most of the rest as far as design structure goes with a fixed timestep.

After I understand how interpolation works I’ll make a little moving sprite “game” just to test this new-found knowledge, afterwards I’ll work on learning collision in a fixed timestep environment and when I get that down i will most likely make another Pong clone with a fixed timestep (it will certainly be smoother).

I will most likely make another post tomorrow or some time soon explaining my progress in understanding this all, because finding articles on this topic is actually pretty difficult and when you do they certainly aren’t as… understandable as one might hope. Perhaps I’ll make a video sharing what I know.

I hope you enjoy this new blog!

It nicely separates the snowy biome from the grassy one.
