i’m not the biggest pokemon guy out there, but i like the series, so i wanted to make a post about the new pokemon game (not snap remake) and that sort of stuff.
so, incase you for some reason haven’t seen it, pokemon unite is a pokemon moba game that’s pretty much from what ive heard pokemon meets league of legends.
now, originally, i wasn’t all that hyped. considering the fact that the pokemon company just seemed to hype this game up so much kinda makes me think it’d be something more than just a cash-in on lol even though i stopped caring about the game years ago.
i know a lot of people still play lol though, so there’s still a big audience for this game i’m sure, it’s just that it feels like it’s not all that substantial. i mean yeah it’s pokemons first big foray into mobas, but i feel like for a mobile game that’s the pokemon equivalent to lol, it could’ve been shown off last week instead of snaps remake so people wouldn’t have felt as underwhelmed, and then hype up snap and then show it off this week, since it would’ve been a more substantial game that attracts a bigger audience and is something a lot of people would want.
overall the game actually looks pretty good for a mobile game, but there is another problem: the game is being made by tencent.
incase you don’t know, tencent is a chinese game company, and their name doesn’t accurately represent how big they are. to summarize, they’re basically the “evil mega corporation” we’ve seen stereotyped in literature, movies, and video games over the years, but it actually exists in real life. now, when this game first got revealed, a lot of people said the reason tencent was the developer of the game was to introduce pokemon to china and popularize it there, which makes sense. there’s no problem with that.
however, there are multiple problems with tencent that i recently discovered through the crappy games wiki on miraheze. apparently tencents become known for copying league of legends back when it was semi independent and now that they own lol they’ve made their subsidiaries make more cash ins for lol, as well as other executive meddling. they’ve also nearly monopolized the battle royale industry, and have online game stores riddled with problems. they’re most controversial for having ties to the cpc, aka the communist party of china. because of this, tencent has released several propaganda games, as well as putting suspicious exploitable drm software in games like valorant and epic store.
essentially, drm stands for digital rights management, which gives the game administrator control over your operating system. i first heard about drms being suspicious with the sonic gather battle ordeal, and in tencents games the drm has been reported to send information to the cpc, which in my opinion is fucked up.
because of this, people have been very concerned about pokemon unite doing the same thing too. hopefully, if it’s found and proven, nintendo will find out. let’s also hope tencent doesn’t buy out nintendo, i say this because tencents bigger, and i can only imagine what would happen if such an event happen.
anyways, the new pokemon snap remake looks awesome, as the original was a great game to begin with.
i wasn’t expecting a gen 4 remake at all, so that’s at least something i somewhat predicted correctly.
anyways, i don’t know how to end this post so im just gonna say this:
if you’re excited for pokemon unite, that’s perfectly fine. hey, maybe the gamell actually be fun when it comes out. im just not gonna risk all the issues with tencent and i don’t find interest in this game either way.
bye
