For the past 2 weeks I haven’t been able to push an update to the game. I feel like all of the motivation to work on it has been lost.
My inner “successful person” is telling me something like “just do it, good game developers can work on their games even when they aren’t feeling motivated”. And I’ve done just that for the past 6 weeks or so.
Completely burning out has made me reflect on my reasons a little bit. I think the reason I’m doing this right now is because I want to create something I’m proud of and that other people enjoy. And, of course, that involves finishing a game.
I think the main reason I can’t finish it at the moment is because I never had an end goal in sight. The idea was I’d stop when I was satisfied with it, and I don’t think I ever would have been. Even in large game studios, features have to get cut and ideas have to be scrapped, ending with a game that never feels finished to the people who worked on it.
So on Sunday, August 13 (13 days from now), I’m going to be creating a new devlog-only project with the design document for a new game I’m coming up with. It will be a detailed concept for a finished game, along with various (maybe weekly) milestones and a target release date.
This will be my redemption. But as for this coming Sunday, I plan on making a different game to try and clear my head a little. Game jam style, in an incredibly short time span. It’s gonna be really stupid.
I’ve updated this game to version 0.19.1, which contains a terrible video tutorial on how to create a custom skin and use it in game, as well as decreasing the prices of all vehicles and a few minor bug fixes. I also upgraded the game engine, which should be fine, but it’s possible something exploded when I wasn’t looking and killed everything. I’ll come back and fix it if something is severely broken.
To be honest, I’m pretty disappointed. This has been my most successful game so far with almost 3000 plays and 50 followers, and it ended in failure. I’m not quitting, and I’m confident I’ll be even more successful with future games now that I’ve had this experience.
I’ll be posting about new developments here for the time being. So if you’re one of the four people who actually see this, look forward to more of my weirdness in the coming weeks.
Thanks for making it to the bottom of this novel of a devlog post, and thanks for playing.
