Undertale/Deltarune Fan Media Review:

Undertale HD: Better Graphics Mod(by IzzyDude).

Howdy. Undertale is known for it's simple art style, letting people interpret details in their own way. And there have been various attempts to add those missing details to the sprites. One of the first ones was Undertale HD: Better Graphics mod. It was heavily critiqued, but is really that bad? Let's find out.

The intro shows Humans and Monsters with... pillow shading. Pillow shading is when you shade something without considering the object's properties(the lighting around it, it's size, how shadows work in general, etc). It is more noticeable with the Toriel-like monster, which now has shadows all over it's head. This doesn't really enchance the sprites or give them more detail, it just makes them busier. Also, some sprites are missing/unchanged, which is a constant thing for this mod. But to be fair, the mod was in beta and then never finished.

After the splash screen, which is just the Undertale logo but with "better graphics" text that's blue for some reason, we finally start controlling Frisk... They're pillow shaded, like the rest of this mod's sprites, but the changed room is what actually caught my attention. It was crudely redrawn, in a style that's different even from the mod's usual art style. And then the flower bed was left completely unchanged. This creates a very amusing art style clash. The next room with Flowey changed his spot into a circle, which is... fine. And then the rest of the rooms were never changed. I am curious how the rest of the rooms would look like with the art style...

Besides pillow shading, the battle sprites were given color. The color picks are mostly okay and aren't note-worthy. Though the game flip flops between pillow shading sprites and just coloring them, as the mod was based on Colored Sprites mod(by Pr3tz31).

Oh, also Toriel and Nasptablook have a unique battle background. That's a genuinly cool thing, too bad the rest of the (mini)bosses don't have their own battle backgrounds.

Some music was also changed... it's alright, I guess. I can tell that there was effort out into those covers, but they're not really that good.

Overall, this mod is quite weird. A 3/10. It wasn't criticized without reason.
