UNDERTALE: PAPYRUS'S BELIEF 2024 Update


Hi!! It's been a while since the last proper update... almost like, 6 months exactly.

I know I said about how we were going completely silent, but we haven't really done that, sooo... devlog! I've got a few things I wanna talk about anyway.

There won't be any huge news like "papyrus fight is done" or "game is completely finished", but I'll get into why that is first.


The switch to Godot

I don't know how public we made this, but in late December we decided to scrap Clickteam entirely and move onto working in Godot. I had a few reasons for this:

  • Clickteam isn't fun to work in at all and is an extremely lacking program; we had to make a lot of workarounds and compromises over issues caused by the program and I didn't like how it was making the quality of the game.

  • We were using an Undertale engine that wasn't made specifically for Belief, which I really didn't like. I wanted to make my own, but I wasn't able to do it in Clickteam.

  • And finally, I wanted to have more of a position in my own project and become the sole coder. Up until December I was doing almost nothing outside of writing since I was originally only able to animate, which had been scrapped in favour of the game.

Since this I've probably sunk around 1000~ hours into Godot and have made an engine already; I decided on remaking it to make it better though, but have since already passed the first engine's progress with the second.

It's safe to say I feel really confident with holding up the project on my own now that I've made a new engine solo, but that obviously comes with a few downsides.

Progress is now back at an early state due to moving programs to make the game in, but with the fact that I'm now coding and this is my own engine, making progress from here will be way easier and more fluid.

However, regardless of if we switched program or not, the progress reset would've happened regardless because of this next thing I want to discuss.


The Project "Rework"

We realised a lot of flaws with Belief as a whole as time has gone on, a lot of it boiling down to writing.

The image we tried to put across was that this was "The true Papyrus experience" whilst it couldn't be further from that. We overshot the mark on who Papyrus is, making him way too self-centric and ironically more oblivious.

Since this revelation, we've made huge changes to the writing, alongside other stuff:

  • The writing is completely overhauled, making Papyrus more aware from the beginning and having him slowly piece things together as things progress. The writing change obviously means some things go unused, but things like Frank are staying, obviously. Why would we remove Frank?

  • To give the project more identity, we're going to be reusing as little assets from Undertale as possible. We're also remaking and updating a lot of older assets.

  • The entire soundtrack is getting updated to "scream Papyrus" more, with Frankness 2 already having a full iteration done. We're also going to have a lot of emphasis on dynamic music.

There's more than just this but I wanna keep it secret! There is so much I'm desperate to tell people about and show but I want to keep the impact those things will have in-game as impactful as possible. It's why I don't plan having stuff like the new song updates released until the game is done.

Also, there's one thing I want to come out and say, which I know I've said in personal posts before.

There's been a handful of people practically demanding Belief be released and that we do what they want. Whilst I know this may boil down to kids being kids, I still want to make my point clear to these type of people:

We do not owe you this game and we can do whatever we want with this project; it's OUR project, not yours. We will work as much as we want, when we want, how we want. I know waiting can suck, but this isn't good.


That's about everything I wanted to cover... sorry if it was disappointing or you were expecting something more grandiose; I do have something planned for when I get progress going proper, but until then this'll be all!

To everyone still reading, we all really appreciate you sticking with the project and its rocky development life. You will get this game, I promise! It's like, my life goal atm.
