UNDERTALE: Twilight Progress Update - October 2023

Hey GameJolters, @JustYourAverageUTFan here with the very first progress update on this project! Before I get into too much depth, I just want to say that the logo (and therefore GameJolt banner) is finished and up on the page! If you haven't seen it yet, well, here it is:

No clue what you'll all think of it, it took me some time to make. Things like this take a while when you're an indie dev, but yeah! That's pretty much it for the logo. Another thing I wanted to clarify is that the achievements don't go outside of the game - this means no GameJolt integration. Why not? Well, there's two reasons:

-It won't be fair on someone who is GameJolt account-less but have the game

-I have no clue how to do it in GameMaker

That's literally the two reasons.

Alright, one final thing before I actually get on to the progress update. At the time of writing, I forgot to include the fact that I am using @TML233 's Undertale Engine to make this game a reality! And while this probably sounds like an ad, I'll say it: if you want to make your own fangame in GameMaker but it's a bit above your skill level, definitely give this engine a shot. Not only is it great and relatively easy-to-use, it's got a Discord help server and a documentation to clarify almost any question you have.

Alright, that's it for the first part! Now it's time for the actual progress update...

As for an amount of progress in percentages, the game is about 2-3 months in development and still in pretty early stages. This means it'll be hard to give a set amount of progress, and it'll probably be inaccurate, but oh well...

Coding - 70% I've got almost all the mechanics of the game ready.

Art - 20% The logo was a pretty big one here, but loads of smaller sprites have to be done, as well as faces etc.

Music - 15% "Before It Began" and "Monster Mania" are the two pieces ready, but "Rude Buster" and "Star" were taken from Deltarune and Undertale.

Rooms/Areas - 5% I've only just started on this aspect.

Cutscenes - 5% There's literally one that's actively being developed.

Writing - 30% It's going pretty smoothly.

Encounters - 20% I ended up making a bunch for a test, then editing them to fit the game.

Boss Battle - 0% It's probably going to stay like this for a while.

Translations - 100% For this demo, only a very limited "tem" translation will be available. However, I'll be adding a Polish translation for each chapter after its release.

Final Testing - 0% You can't do any final testing until the game's finished.

Total - 26.5%

That's pretty much it! One thing that set me back quite a bit was fixing a problem with the UI refusing to be transparent. Luckily it came out well and I even managed to get some very nice corners! The only UI that's still got the transparency problem is the "CELL" menu, but I don't even know if I'll use that.

Anyways, I managed to get almost every mechanic done except for enemies chasing you. Encounters will be triggered like they are in Deltarune, where touching an enemy begins the battle. I've got that done perfectly except for the enemy chasing you if you get too close. I haven't tried to implement it yet though, so hopefully it'll go smoothly when I get to it!

The final problem is shaders. I've been trying to add ambient lighting to my game, but I've been failing so far because of my very limited shader knowledge. So if I don't work it out by the time everything else is done, I'll probably ask someone to help me with it, which would mean that the team will grow!

Maybe.

Well, that's it for the October progress update! Have a good [insert time of day]!

A lot is happening at the moment. Be prepared for a BIG progress update in December!

Gameplay Footage - Whimsun

This includes pretty much every way to beat Whimsun. Also apologies that there's so much of one attack; it's generated randomly so there's not much I can do about it... Also, the battle music is a placeholder.

Shoobies leave a sticky trail of mucus in their wake, which can impede movement for any creature that steps in it.

Here's a peaceful little forest scene for this #screenshotsaturday, from the beginning of the game.

We made a lot of improvements on the Freezing Plains visual. Things like pine trees, tiny bushes, some rocks, and others game props!

Sonic and Shadow as Pokémons. #Fakemon

Hello my space friends! Now I added a space background to the ship. I love that space look but I still feel like stuff is missing. The lighting on the ship needs some improvements I think. Please tell me your opinion!
