Watching people play Hinterland has been an invaluable asset in terms of development. I learned a lot, I found some bugs, and I had fun.
One thing that’s hard to do as one person, or even with a small team, is gauge difficulty. I think getting the best ending in Hinterland has turned out to be a little more challenging than I wanted. With that in mind, here’s the changelog for the latest version, 1.2.0:
-Converted a certain sound file from WAV to OGG to cut about 10MB out of the game’s size (oops)
-Fixed a glitch that allowed for walking through shelves in an upstairs hallway
-Fixed a glitch that allowed for walking through a tray in the hospital
-Fixed a glitch where a tall monster’s head would clip through some shelves in the shop
-Minor adjustments to game difficulty, particularly in the Last Hall
-Minor adjustment to the requirements to achieve the better and best endings
In addition, the package now includes two walkthroughs; one full of spoilers, and one that keeps as many secrets as possible.
As much as it pained me to do so, I decided to add a super secret cheat to the spoilery walkthrough. It was something I put in the game for those people who wanted to really dig deep, but I think it might be necessary for more people to get the best ending and experience all the game has to offer. Don’t worry, there are still a lot of secrets in Hinterland, a few things I haven’t seen anyone find, and a lot of symbolism and hidden meanings I’m not sure anyone has picked up on yet.
I wanted Hinterland to be an experience that changes, where some events are random, and people want to explore. I think there is a balance between that and the game being so confusing or hard that it ends up being frustrating. I’m trying to find that balance, and I thank everyone who is helping me along the way.
As always, have fun!
