Welcome back, today I will showcase a few of the things I made in the past month, then I will reveal a few details about this game's story!
I started work on a few of the reddit maps, here's a little sneak peek:
(Inside subreddits)
(High up view of reddit, with the mod palace(placeholder sprite) in the distance)
(Redditian fields)
I also changed textboxes to not take up the entire width of the screen, so less movement for your eyes and the text is generally more centered on the screen.
I also started writing scripts for a certain dialog-heavy part of the game. I'm really thinking about everything in a "better safe than sorry" way, I don't want to add anything in the game unless I know for sure I like it.
Alright, now that that's outta the way, allow me to present you a little summary of what I have in store for this game's story, plot and worldbuilding!
It's been 4 years since James, Jeff, Jess and Josh saved the internet during the events of "Shitty RPG: Web Journey". For some reason, James has stopped going on the internet completely. And Jeff seemingly disapeared from the face of the web. Jess stayed in contact with Josh, and they thought it could be fun to get whole gang back together once more. Jess manages to contact James and convinces him to come back on the internet. And thus begins their Odyssey through the web to find their friend Jeff!
A lot has changed on the web since the last time James logged on. For one, "Bio-uploading" is no longer necessary, and people can go to the virtual lands in the comfort of their own homes using a special headset. A company called AlphaBeta seems to be a big manufacturer of new cyber equipment like these. Furthermore, "web 3.0" seems to be the new hit thing, websites can now be visited in the 3 dimensional cyber space.
The web also seems a bit more political than before. In the past few years, two brand new socio-economico-political views have emerged: A Thinking and B Thinking. These two views are complete polar opposites of one another. And everyone on the web seems to fall under one of those two camps. Either you're an A Thinker or you're a B Thinker, no in-between.
Although, there is one thing that the internet can agree on, an up-and-coming Youtuber that everybody seems to like, he's never gotten into any controversies, he makes high quality content and uploads frequently, he has a chill personality and isn't obnoxious or annoying and he doesn't even take sponsorships!? Just who could this person be? I sure do hope nothing bad ever happens to his perfect track record!
The game will be divided into 6-ish chapters, each chapter will focus on a certain website and/or theme. For example, chapter 1 will take place inside Reddit. Chapter 2 and 4 have already been slightly shown in the trailer, and all of chapter 3's enemies can be seen together at some point in the trailer.
In between each chapter you will be able to freely explore the world wide web in one big interconnected overworld. There will be a large variety of random things to do, npc's to talk to and shops to shop in. On the "general web", you'll be fighting all the generic meme enemies that don't fit any of the chapter's themes. You will also be able to fight optional bosses that will open up paths and shortcuts in the overworld once beaten.
The "general web" itself is divided into a few different zones and websites that wouldn't have enough content on their own to be worth a full chapter.
Lastly, I would like to touch upon our 3 main characters. One is a white guy, one is a woman and the other is a furry. What do they all have in common? Well of course, they're all hated by certain groups of people on the internet. A lot of people online hate white men, a lot of people hate women, and a lot a people hate furries! What a perfect group of underdogs fit for the task of saving the internet! I mean uhh... finding their friend Jeff...
Why did James stop going on the internet? What happened to Jeff? Why is the internet so divided? Are all of these things connected somehow? Why does every quirky indie rpg have to tackle serious topics? Find out the answer to all of those questions and more in...
