Weekly Update 2: Climbing

A common issue in most platformers is, strangely enough, vertical movement. You’d think that this would be the specialty of a genre where jumping is king, but that’s not entirely true. There’s a reason why Spelunky has you going left, right, or down, but rarely up.

In Skelemania, my fix for moving upwards was an ugly one: repeatably jumping up through platforms. In Super Skelemania, I really wanted to fix this. So, I added ladders!

I rarely like Ladders in games, which is why I’ve avoided them in the past. I like how they came out here, though. You just walk up to a wall with a ladder and keep walking. Walking towards a ladder climbs it and walking away from it slides down it. You can also jump off ladders, as you can see from the gif.

I hope this new addition will make vertical movement a bit more enjoyable for everyone. See you next week!

I'm currently making a Tetris + Mahjong hybrid game called #Nojong. Match colored blocks in the field to make clears. After a number of clears, the blocks left in your hand are scored, so you want to try and keep triples and quadruples in your hand.
