PREMISE
The plot summary for this game is quite short, simply telling that, and I quote, "A new entertainment is close to opening its doors and reveal the legend from the past". Apart from stating that this location's name is Fazbear Fantasy Land, it doesn't tell much.
Luckily, phone calls and statements from Tyler help us once again. TRTF 3 takes place the same year TRTF 1 does, 2015. Fazbear Fantasy Land has been founded by 3 young men (or teens, depending on the version), called Wilson, Chun, and Blake (our night guard and player character). During the game, Wilson and Chun manage to retrieve a lot of animatronics from Freddy's and Fredbear's. Somehow. I wonder how they got the rights for them.
But, let's discuss this in the gameplay section.
GAMEPLAY
Fazbear Fantasy Land has 2 floors, making it the biggest TRTF location. There are 2 main mechanics in this game to repel the animatronics: the Door Lock (wich however can break and needs to be rebooted), and the Signal Corruption (wich scares the animatronics off). Despite being obviously inspired from FNAF 3, these are actually very original ideas and are very cool.
The animatronic cast consists of, in mechanic order:
1) Freddy, Bonnie, Kitty FazCat, and Lockjaw (wich are stopped by the Door Lock).
2) Chica, Foxy, and Vigo, an animatronic snake (they will reach the office hallway, and you have to use the Corrupt Signal to scare them off).
3) Shadow Lockjaw and Golden Freddy (both of them are hallucinations, altough Shadow Lockjaw can crash your game if you don't pull up the monitor).
Regarding Lockjaw, if you ever lose track of him, then don't worry! Because you have the "View Animatronic" option on your panel, and you can use it to see through Lockjaw's eyes and find him... But the rooms all look the same, so it's impossible to find him. Damnit Tyler.
Regarding the models... I have mixed feelings about them. The Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy models are mostly ruined versions of the TRTF 2 ones, altough they aren't reused assets. Kitty FazCat and Lockjaw got entirely new models for this game, and I love them! Especially Lockjaw's model, wich is my favorite one.
Regarding Fazbear Fantasy Land's look... It's strange. Most of the cameras are just big, empty rooms and hallways. While they do have a "Backrooms" vibe that gives me the creeps, Fazbear Fantasy Land isn't supposed to be a horror attraction, but a children's estabilishment. The place looks so damn depressing for a kid. Our 360° office does have a desk and various drawings, but it still looks strange.
Now, from a gameplay standpoint, it isn't that bad, altough it gets pretty hard as early as Night 2 since it introduces 4 characters at once, at least for me. However, the save sistem is broken. Broken as hell. Starting a new game deletes all your data, and continuing from Night 5 erases all of your achievements. Not even TRTF 2 had this problem.
So, after the gameplay, it's time to discuss this game's lore. It's here, in fact, that Lockjaw truly gains his relevance in the games's story, becoming TRTF's poster child.
LORE
As I said earlier, TRTF 3 takes place in 2015 like TRTF 1, altough it was speculated to take place in 1998 back in TRTF's glory days in the fandom.
Wilson and Chun (collectively known as "The Phone Buddies) leave you calls from Night 1 to 6, to either explain what they have done or hint some lore. They don't actually tell you how to survive. If it wasn't for the wiki, I wouldn't have had the slightest idea of how I was supposed to play this game. Good job Tyler.
Anyways, on Night 1 they (I don't know who's Wilson and who's Chun) tell you what they want to accomplish and to watch over the robots, while also taking a shot at the "The Animatronics walk" urban legend.
Guys, never mock the walking animatronics. This must be why they want to kill us, the Phone Buddies made them angry. Idiots.
On Night 2 they inform you of their discovery of 4 other robots, and that one of them (dubbed "The Legendary Animatronic", AKA Lockjaw) still works despite being kinda slimey. On Night 3 not only is Vigo brought over, but we discover that "The Legendary Animatronic" comes from a small diner called "Frankburt's Pizza" wich was open in 1958.
Now, this not only gives Lockjaw his own location (retconning him coming from Fredbear's), but also tells us about an even older restaurant. TRTF surely started the trend of fangames pushing FNAF's tech realism to the extreme.
On Night 4, a "Dark Secret" is revealed to us. The killer responsible for the MCI... Was an employee at Frankburt's called Fritz Smith (Phone Guy/Purple Guy). Wich means that everyone knew that Phone Guy was the killer, yet not only he wasn't arrested, but the CEO left him work at Fredbear's, despite having commited at least 5 murders! Jesus Christ, the CEO doesn't have OCD, he's utterly braindead! Now, the call tries to imply that "Fritz Smith" was a fake name, but it doesn't work. Seriously. To quote:
"And, it’s very interesting, his name is Fritz Smith. Um, I don’t think that’s his name though…"
It comes across as him not remembering Fritz's name.
On Night 5 it's revealed that Fazbear Fantasy Land opens up tomorrow, despite the lack of props. Guys, your children oriented estabilishment looks like the Backrooms, why the Hell are you opening already? You haven't even fixed the robots, they look broken as heck!
Now, before addressing Night 6, we have to talk about the post night and secret minigames (the latters are required to unlock the good ending, wich copies the FNAF 3 one).
In the post Night 1/2/3 minigames, we go around Fredbear's Family Diner as Shadow Lockjaw, randomly awakening animatronics up. I don't understand what's happening to be honest. Night 4 lacks one of this minigames, unlike Night 5.
In the Night 5 minigame, we play as none other than Purple Guy. We arrive in a locked room with Sugar, Frankburt, and a crying BFP inside. If we approach BFP, he'll get inside Frankburt to hide from us. Unfortunately... The springlocks go off, killing him. Yep, Lockjaw is TRTF's Springtrap, but as a kid.
Now, onto the secret minigames:
1) I AM HIM/Backstory. Accesible through moving the mouse between "New Game" and "Continue", untill the latter becomes "I AM HIM". We play as BFP inside a green colored room with a desk, a computer, a table, and a door. We have to exit through the door to end the minigame. Basically Tyler's backstory.
2) Kitty Corner. We are Kitty FazCat in a room with 4 children. We hace to grab our staff, go through the left wall, and fall in a room with 4 dead kids. Approach them. Unlockable by double clicking on the Kitty FazCat figurine in the office.
3) A Past To Remember. Unlockable by finding and double clicking on the drawing of a child and Purple Guy holding Golden Freddy's head, on the left side of your office. We are in a room full of children watching an animatronic show. We go behind the stage, ignore Golden Freddy in the next room, glitch through the left wall, and end in a secret room with dead kids and Purple Guy running towards us holding Golden Freddy's head. Approach the dead kids.
4) The Joy of Creation. Hold down the keys "B" "F" and "P" at the same time on the keyboard while in a night. As BFP, we are watching the Toy Animatronics perform. Go to the right, ignore The Puppet, get onto the same level as him and move to the left into one of the steps, you will be forced through it, and fall into a room with Lockjaw. Touching him will make BFP enter into Lockjaw, causing Lockjaw's eyes to glow.
5) He Has Been Here The Whole Time. Double click the Shadow Lockjaw poster that appears in the Office on Night 5. You play as him glitching through all the other minigames. You can complete this minigame in 2 ways, both of wich have to executed. In the first one, play it like the Shadow Bonne minigame in FNAF 3. For the other, arrive in the "APTR" room, glitch through the top left. You'll get in a room where The Purple Guy is watching BFP dieing inside of Lockjaw, with "HELP ME" written in blood on the wall. Approach Lockjaw.
6) FBP. Click on an arcade in CAM 6. As The Purple Guy, you walk around a small diner, arriving in a room where Lockjaw is entertaining kids, like BFP. Approach him.
7) CD+. Click the code on the keyboard. You are in a room with BFP bleeding and tied to a wall with a hook, you play as a bizzarre looking Green Guy, and you have to use golden parts of Lockjaw to reach the door and to get out. Then it ends.
8) Vigo's Joyful Day. Double click on the topmost of the three green crates, on the right side of the office. You are Vigo entertaining children. Trying to leave the room by going to the right will take you back to where you started, but with the kid in a green shirt now is crying, and the other kids are laughing at him. Upon trying to leave we'll be taken back again, but now the children in the red shirts will be gone, and the we'll see Purple Guy staring at the green shirt child, who is now dead. A green door will appear ahead, the exit.
9) Happiest Moment Of My Life. Open CAM 05 and click on one of the drawings just above CAM 06 button. It's a copy of the HD minigame in FNAF 3.
So... What do we know now? Lockjaw's a springlock suit, BFP died inside of him during TRTF 2's gameplay, his true name is Frankburt, and he had his own diner in 1958. Wich means that Purple Guy is at least in his 80s/early 90s. Jeez.
Now, to be honest... I actually find HHBHTWT and CD+ to actually be scary and unnerving. With HHBHTWT, it's mainly because of the 2nd way to complete it. It can be unlocked accidentaly, and as such, you can be jumpscared by someone twitching in blood with a barely humanoid Purple Guy watching us. CD+ instead, has a really... Surreal atmosphere. Why is BFP tied to a wall with hooks? Who is the Green Guy? Why are there golden parts of Lockjaw? Does that mean he has a golden variant? What is happening Goddamnit?!
Anyways, now we can finally talk about Night 6. And... Well, I'll just quote the call transcript for you:
"Oh. Um, hey. The legendary animatronic killed six children last night... The FBI came over and forced us to shut down, Jesus. Just keep an eye on the animatronics tonight, ok? Umm... the demolishing crew will be coming in a few hours. Just... make sure you get out by 6 AM. Anyways, good night."
Yes. Lockjaw killed 6 kids (apparently by hugging them to death) and the FBI, instead of battling Al Capone, forces them to close Fazbear Fantasy Land. I have no words.
Anyways, after Night 6 we get a newspaper telling us what Phone Buddy already has, and the game ends.
------
FINAL THOUGHTS
On one hand, TRTF 3 has a good creepy atmosphere, the models are definitely an improvement (especially Lockjaw's and Kitty FazCat's), and the lore, despite stretching the tech, still kinda makes sense.
On the other... The gameplay can be frustrating, and the save sistem bug kills any kind of replay value. I didn't try "Funtime Fright" mode (basically 7/20 mode), and overall, TRTF 3 isn't horrible. This was supposed to be the finale of TRTF, and it wraps most things up... Except CD+. Nothing about that minigame is ever explained in-game.
As such, TRTF 4 ended up happening. But that's a story for another time. See you soon.
