Well, here's my theory on how the portal works in Desolation, maybe it's crazy to you, maybe a little too much, but it's just a random theory that popped into my head lol, let's get started.
Anyone who read what Alison says in the opening scene of the old trtf: desolation saw him say one sentence:
"If my current theory is indeed correct however, I might be able to make this world anew."
So I think the portal function isn't travel to other worlds or time travel, but creating a new world from the pieces of the current one could be what we saw at the end of the second Desolation trailer.
