For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to develop video games. I was never introduced to any coding languages besides basic python so I was never really able to make my own games.
But then something horrible happened, certain games allowed you to design levels. I fell completely obsessed with that concept, the ability to add onto my favorite games in an extremely easy way with no coding required.
When I was 12 years old I found this little Clickteam Fusion game called The Escapists and this featured a level creator too. The thought of building my own super hard prison excited me.
But here’s the problem I’m Alex Scholebo, It’s become my thing at this point to make things unnecessarily complicated. So I took the basic escapists formula and put my Alex Scholebo twist on it.
The map wasn’t a prison, instead it was a small town. A small town with rules so strict that your goal is to escape this town in pursuit of a better life.
Of course, in classic Alex Scholebo fashion the map also had a deep storyline and some hidden details for you to learn about the town.
There’s just one tiny issue.
I made it when I was 12.
The entire map was filled with spelling mistakes, illogical thinking and me being a general idiot.
But it was the first thing I ever made gain traction.
In it’s popularity it gained 700 subscriptions and 3000 unique visitors on steam. And to my surprise it was at #3 in the most played prisons of the week. (Even though it wasn’t even a prison!)
Everything that I’ve ever made got at most 6 unique visitors and I’ve jumped to 3000 and it blew my mind. I absolutely loved every second of it and I thought this was the start to becoming a game dev.
Recently, I was browsing steam until I stumbled across that map again. I’ve had so many fond memories, this map was a defining part of my childhood.
I saw it, and the cringe nearly killed me.
To see something that I looked up to for so many years for what it really was, a cringy kid who got way too much attention destroyed me.
Then I had an idea:
Who wants to see my childhood burn before my eyes? Well my fans on gamejolt of course!
So, I’m happy to announce that I will be streaming The Escapists: Village Town tomorrow starting at 1:00 PM CST I hope to see some of you guys there!
