Insanely I somehow introduced hidden key frames in my blend file early on, which totally messes the physics and produced the beautiful bugs I recorded in my previous post.
Well, and the internet connection is trash; and high sierra is BS that restarts my comp every half an hour.

I worked so hard to get all four of them to the end safely, but then...
