A personal reflection on the game from one of the developer's
Cowy Balloon is a game about home. The memories we share. The desires to grow. Leaving, but always finding a warm place for us when we return.
Towards the end of development, I realized it also reflected some tensions in my personal life. While we may dream of visiting new places, we are often bound to our home. Mothers who want the best for us may ultimately do their best to keep us home.
Recently, my sister and girlfriend have been facing pushy mothers attempting to persuade them to return home. My sister moved away from home and is living in a far off city away from me. My girlfriend moved away from her home and is now living with me near my home. Both of their mothers have been extremely sad lately, like the Mama Cow in Cowy Balloon. They dream of their children moving back home to live near them.
And I realized the message of the story, "Home is where the Heart is", is not always a good one. We need to let go, we need to grow. And sometimes, we need to move on from our homes.
David Foster Wallace said mothers have a knife in our backs, that they can twist at anytime. I feel that this game may be that knife. The warm, happy scenes of this children's game may actually hurt those who are trying to start a new.
I believe kids should decide for themselves what they should do in life. They should not be pressured by their mothers to stay home. They should go and grow on their own. Do not take this light hearted game at surface level. Some may pain over its message.
