Beguiling Match: Fox vs. Tanuki! - Fox-a-Lily and Tomodachi-Tanuki’s childish games

In the forest shrine some playful trickster kami come out to play, possessing local humans for their games. The tanuki loves to chase the foxes and swap bodies with them in the dark, like a game of tag. Some nights they all try to put each other to sleep with their magic, and who knows what tricks the last one awake might play?

Inspired by the Japanese idiom from which it takes its name (狐と狸の化かし合い [Kitsune to Tanuki no bakashiai]) and the mythological creatures it references, this game puts up to 8 players in the roles of fox and tanuki spirits playing various pranking games together. Stealth is key to this trickery, so player vision is limited! For PartyJam 2021, we’ve put together these play modes:

• Tanuki Tag: In a 3 minute round, foxes try to escape having their body swapped by the tanuki! As the tanuki, you try to tag foxes who can’t see you with your body-swap spell, and then you get to be a fox and escape while the other player is now a tanuki! Each player is scored on how well they do: for every 10 consecutive seconds un-tagged as a fox, score a point! But you also score a point if you tag someone as the tanuki! You can’t tag-back the person who swapped you into the tanuki role, though, so you’ll have to find someone else to score on.

Controls: WASD or arrow keys on keyboard, A+D or left+right control rotation of your facing, W+S or up+down control moving forward and back. If you are the Tanuki in Tanuki Tag, press spacebar to cast your spell on someone you can see. If you can’t see your score at the end screen, try the mouse scroll wheel, it might have scrolled out of view.
