No nose boop?

With the game now in a finished state, I think I can give my full, honest review. I think this remake fixes a lot of issues I had with the gameplay of the original! For starters, I like that the cameras don't take away any power. This simple change really makes me want to rely on them much more than the office lights, as opposed to what many would do in the original game where the cameras begin to feel like an after thought. Having the door lights as a way of confirming your suspicions of the characters location rather than being a spammable utility that ends up becoming the primary way of finding Bonnie and Chica in the later nights is exactly how I think FNAF 1 should have been! On top of that, I appreciate how Freddy's gimmick was made much more concise and easy to understand. Listening for how close he might be based on the volume of his laugh and then checking the nearest cameras to confirm if he is at your door or not is a very satisfying gameplay loop that compliments the already added amount of camera usage greatly! Also, now that Foxy is fixed and only moves when his camera is not being watched, unlike how it used to be in the original game where it was all cameras that stalled him, I think he has become much more of a satisfying threat as well. I very much like how instant his run is from his final pose on the camera, it kinda reminds me of the Clown from Flumpty's 2 where you need to constantly keep tabs on him to predict exactly when you should turn off the lights (or in this case, close the door.) I think all of these small changes add up to make an incredibly challenging yet fair and rewarding gameplay loop that keeps you on your toes and doesn't feel nearly as repetitive as the original game! Overall, gameplay wise, this is a massive upgrade over the original, and of course the new graphics and animations tie everything together to make this a complete and definitive FNAF 1 experience!

This was really cool!! Definitely an upgrade from the original version you released, honestly I was hesitant to try this out given I wasn't really a fan of the original version (I do know it was a test project now, but I didn't know that until I had already finished the update) but once I saw the trailer and everything you were doing, I just knew I had to give it a go.


This game feels like a proper remake of the original formula, it takes what worked in the original, amplifies it by 1000, and changes up the stuff that faulted it! This game is obviously by no means perfect (I'll get to that in a minute), but what it does do right it does RIGHT. I had a lot of fun with this, I had no idea what to expect going in and it's clear you accomplished what you set out to do while developing this project.

Here's a simple Pros and Cons list of my experience! Hopefully this helps your projects going forward, as well as help you able to fix any bugs I encountered during my playthrough, because trust me there was certainly a good few.


PROS:

  • The character models look stunning! The designs are by no means original, they're very much the common "redesigned" fnaf 1 cast everyone does but they work for what they're intended for. They all have an insane amount of polish in them, and the endoskeleton actually feeling feasibly and structurally stable is just the cherry on top. The springlocks look wonderful as well! I adore the fact that you included pins to show how each lock functions, even if you never see it during the game.

  • The mechanics are a HUGE upgrade from the original FNaF 1, the game does a great job at camera usage especially. Freddy is a COMPLETE gamechanger, and I really adore how you took his moving wall mechanic and turned it into just a force that can go quite literally anywhere it wants.

    Every time I heard him laugh, I pretty much shat myself looking for where he went. The cams and lights constantly stuttering and flickering did not help with that in the BEST way possible, looking for Freddy is a nightmare and I adore it.

    Foxy not being entirely reliant for when you're looking at him was great as well, I love that he can just bolt at any moment if you just so much as took your eye off him for one second. The fact that you can even see him beginning to move just adds so much flavor to it, and it really telegraphs what he's about to do.

  • The visuals were wonderful overall! The game very much has a set atmosphere, and the cues it took from the movie absolutely fit well here. The little things that could happen too like the carousel going insane were also really cool, I adore random events like that and it's awesome to see more games utilizing that.

  • The Logbook is a REALLY creative idea, I love that it's used to not only track the ingame time but it's a perfect way to get the story across as well as telegraphing Freddy's mechanic considering Phone Guy isn't much help at all.

  • The showtape from Freddy and Friends: On Tour being used was a really neat touch! I'm happy you didn't just use the scrapped HW showtime song since I never really liked that one that much. Foxy having completely broken music to go with the fact that he's out of order was a sick touch as well.

  • The 12 AM sequence on Night 5 where you actually leave the room was SUPER cool, I've never seen a fangame do that before on that kind of level and everything that was utilized there was utilized properly. I also love that you can see what remains of Phone Guy as you're running from Foxy, not many people actually take his death into account!

  • Having the missing kids posters appearing throughout the game was an insanely cool touch, and it's even cooler that they appear in places that directly show who they're possessing as well. The artists involved with them and the cutouts both did an amazing job! I love that the posters also take cues from Freddy and Friends: On Tour as well.


That's pretty much all I can think of off the top of my head at the moment! The way I see it, this game is essentially what FNaF: In Real Time wanted to be just done on a whole other level of cool. You actually utilized the fact that you're working with Unity to your fullest, and you did wonderfully! I genuinely cannot wait to see what you do with 2, however before that I do have some criticisms/bugs to point out. Hopefully you can use these to benefit your future projects!

The game is wonderful. The mechanics are the classic ones but they have a small tweak that makes them more special. I like the way the game tells you what time you are. I've played the whole game and I think it's divine. My congratulations!

PD: The secret night in the night 5 it's really good. It's a real challenge, but It's bug. After some time, the lights turn off and you can't do nothing

About the REWRITTEN series:

I plan to eventually make a Rewritten version of 1-6 to tell the full story.  4,5,6 will have the biggest story changes. The first 3 games will mostly introduce the world of the Rewritten games and set up things that will pay off in 4-6. If I get burnt out or the other stuff going on in my life gets busier then I will be stopping at 3.

I started writing the full story of the project around the release of Security Breach. After Security Breach, I wanted to go back and rewrite the games to have a clear story that doesn't venture far into the world of sci-fi. I started making the story into games as a way to practice lighting, atmosphere, and world-building. The Rewritten series is meant to present the rewrite in a more faithful way than projects like FNAF+, but different enough to be interesting for players of the original.

This brings me to something that's very important for those who are going to play the game: This game is not meant to be a replacement/alternative to playing the original FNAF 1!!! This is a different experience that tells a different story, it's not just a free FNAF 1 clone!!

The game is meant to be a way for players of the original games to re-visit FNAF in a way that also brings back the feeling of putting together the story for the first time.

The overhaul update is almost done! This means there won't be any more development streams because most of whats left to do is spoiler territory. But I'll be participating in a game jam in the next few weeks so I might stream that!
