Awaking Nightmare is a first year university project derived from Unity's Survival Shooter.

The goal of this project was to take Survival Shooter, and address the original design aspects, limitations and shortcomings, to reflect upon those and create a more enjoyable experience through gameplay and game mechanics.

With this being the first project of the year, over 12 weeks the use of Unity and C# were learnt and used to expand Survival Shooter, adding in game new game mechanics.

The design goals for this prototype was to expand on the limited spawn system that existed inside Survival Shooter, and create a new system that gave the game a more enjoyable feel and gameplay experience. On top of that new mechanics have been added to the behavior of enemies, the flow of the game, and look.

Keeping with the original Survival Shooter aesthetic, thought was given to how context could be added to give the game more substance. This is where the idea of the child sleeping, and waking in a nightmare came to be.

In the end, Awakening Nightmare turned out to be a solid paced arena shooter, touching on elements of the bullet hell genre.
